Former NPR Host Has New Parenting Blog
Any NPR geeks out there? Somehow, given the high intelligence and information hunger of our readers (not to mention your good looks and pleasant aroma), I think there are. So you might be pleasantly surprised to find out that Madeline Brand, former host of the canceled “Day to Day” show, now has joined the totally fun — and highly lucrative (cough) — world of parenting blogging (although actually, it might just be a financial step up from public radio). She’ll be writing and podcasting for the LA Times.
And based on the first post, it’s going to be a worthy read. She describes her objectives thusly: “I think we’re all a wee bit neurotic, and the plethora of information out there probably is not helping. My desire is to challenge the often-paralyzing societal pressure to get it right. My hope is that this podcast isn’t one more anxiety-producing parenting log on that huge bonfire but more like a place to cool off, relax and realize that:
a) you’re going to be OK.
b) so is your child.
c) this parenting thing can actually be a lot of fun.”
This week’s topic is classic children’s boooks you find just wretched. She, and a couple of her pals, reserve special scorn for The Giving Tree. I must say, it’s the anti-Where the Wild Things are for me — I loved it as a kid and find it just a little bit galling as an adult. The boy takes everything from his tree friend and never even says thank you? Really? Is that the kind of lesson I want to impart to my kids about gratitude and accepting kindness?
After writing about classic kid’s books last week, I thought this would be a nice dovetail, so I am jumping off Brand’s idea here: Which book did you love as a kid and now just cringe whenever your own kid asks you to read it to him?

But as I was reading it through in the car on the way home, I was shocked by how creepy it really is. I mean who wouldn’t be scared by the Mom driving over to her grown Son’s house, breaking in to his bedroom, and picking him up and rocking him while singing. The pictures really don’t help and I immediately regretted my purchase. Although my husband and I did get a good laugh out of it. That’s the last time I won’t take the 3 minutes to read the book through in the store before purchase.
