Oprah, Will You be My Mommy?

Posted by jeannesager on October 19th, 2009 at 11:27 am

oprah 225x300 Oprah, Will You be My Mommy?A year ago, there was hearty helping of parents who wanted to BE Jon and Kate. Today – no one would touch them with a ten-foot pole.

So what about the kids? Not the Gosselin kids . . . YOUR kids.

Erica Maxwell at the Frisky is betting the shine is off the apple for some kids who watched it with their parents too. Just like her dreams of waking up one day to find Mel Gibson had adopted her were over the minute he started screaming about Jews.

OK, total honesty here: never dreamed of calling Mel Dad. . . maybe letting him know he was our daddy. Wait, what? Hmm. He’s off on the crazy train somewhere, and we’ve long since put our own fantasies to pasture.

But she got us thinking about celebrities we wouldn’t mind adopting us – even in our adult state.

Can anyone say Oprah? As my colleague here on the ‘derby Sandy Maple pointed out – she’s fabulously rich AND she likes dogs. ‘Nuff said Sandy.

Those of us who grew up WITH TV admitted hankerings for TV moms showing up on our childhood doorsteps: Samantha Stevens (aka Elizabeth Montgomery), please twitch your nose and take us away. I’d say the celebs in parent roles – the TV moms and dads, even the movie moms and dads – are a common fantasy for kids.

That’s why the Mel pick from the Frisky surprised us .  .  . but the Harrison Ford one made sense. And of course, if you’re looking for the parent TO BE rather than one to adopt you, these days we’re thinking January Jones.

Did you pick a celeb dream parent?

I had many issues with my mentally ill mother growing up, so sadly, I pined for many celeb parents! My “top two” were Susan St. James on “Kate & Allie” and — I’m slightly embarrassed to admit this — Mr. Drummond on “Diff’rent Strokes.” ;)

Oprah ?
The woman who gives a soapbox to Jenny “I want to kill your kids by convincing you not innoculate them against measles” Macarthy ?

No thanks.

My parents were divorced so I almost seriously pretended Harrison Ford was my dad. Isn’t that sort of sad? I didn’t know everyone did this, but of course! Looking back he was a good pick, I’ll keep him.

Crazy talk. There were times when I hated my dad, but never did I fantasize about having celebrity or character parents.
