Humpty Dumpty Gets a Happy Ending

broken egg sm250 Humpty Dumpty Gets a Happy EndingWho says kids today are coddled and soft?  Lots of people, that’s who.  And if you don’t believe it, consider what the BBC has done to the nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty.  In the original story, poor little Humpty Dumpty meets his maker at the bottom of a wall:

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
All the king’s horses,
And all the king’s men,
Couldn’t put Humpty together again

That is kind of a downer, but that’s the way the story has gone since at least the 1800′s.  But the BBC thought the story needed a less traumatic ending and gave it a little tweak for the popular children’s channel, CBeebies.  In the new and improved version, Humpty doesn’t end up scrambled on the pavement.  Instead, all the King’s horses “made Humpty happy again.”

The BBC insists that the changed ending has nothing to do with protecting precious snowflakes and their delicate sensibilities.  It was just a creative and fun thing to do.  I don’t buy it.  After all, this is the same group that made Miss Muffet and the spider best friends.
