10 Movies that Won’t Drive Mom to Drink
“So much time and so little to do. Wait a minute. Strike that. Reverse it.”
I don’t know about you, but Gene Wilder still does it for me in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I never fail to laugh at the devilish candy titan’s reaction when he watches Mike Teevee disobey his warning and hop onto the Chocolate Television machine: a very unenthusiastic, ”Stop. Don’t. Come Back.”
Thank God for kid movies that don’t make parents want to slit their wrists in boredom. Andrew O’Hehir of Salon recently set down a list of his Top 10 Kids’ Movies That Aren’t For Kids. Here’s his take:
1. ” Spirited Away”
2. ”The Nightmare Before Christmas”
3. ”Wall-E”
4. ”Fantastic Planet”
5. ”Coraline”
6. ”Charlie and the Chocolate Factory/Willie Wonka”
7. ”The Witches”
8. ”The Dark Crystal”
9. ”Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”
10. ” Gremlins”
Personally, I’d add “Finding Nemo” and, for dancing elephant and hippo lovers, “Fantasia”. Anything missing?

BlackOrchid commented on Oct 16 09 at 4:57 pmWell, I think “The Witches” and “Gremlins” are kind of really scary. Not sure about them!
I’d add “Treasure Planet” – a surprisingly good, underrated Disney film, especially good for boys! I loved it!
jenny tries too hard commented on Oct 16 09 at 5:03 pmI hated hated hated Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, even as a kid. I would totally add “Lilo & Stitch” to the list. I’d love that movie even if I had no kids.
BlackOrchid commented on Oct 16 09 at 5:19 pmIt looks like Salon’s list is more of “why are these children’s films?!?!” list rather than movies parents and children can enjoy. so Gremlins, The Witches, and Chitty Chitty (horrifying!) make sense in that context.
As far as films we can enjoy WITH our children, thank God for Pixar is all I can say! (and The Iron Giant and Treasure Planet, did I mention that one yet?)
Marj commented on Oct 16 09 at 6:25 pmI’ll second Treasure Planet, and add Titan A.E. and The Secret of NIMH.
TolaniLucia commented on Oct 17 09 at 10:37 amThe Secret of NIMH for sure, The Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, The Muppets take Manhattan, The peanut butter solution, Wallace and Gromit, Babe, almost all Don Bluth’s movies. Gosh there are so many.
TolaniLucia commented on Oct 17 09 at 10:37 amEven Fantastic Planet has been entertaining for the wee one.

GGsmama commented on Oct 17 09 at 3:25 pmI kind of liked the first Toy Story. I’m partial to musicals I guess- Annie, The Wizard of Oz, even the old Peter Pan with Mary Martin in it…
I do like the list above, though, for older kids- I can’t wait for the day I can watch The Nightmare Before Christmas with my daughter!
Ri-chan commented on Oct 17 09 at 4:09 pmSpirited Away is an AWESOME movie, but surprisingly, not a lot of people have seen it.
