Morning News – RIP Captain Lou Albano
Former Professional Wrestler and all around amusing guy Captain Lou Albano died yesterday. He was 76.
MTV News points out that Albano was known to many as “the live-action face of Mario in ‘The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!’”, a Saturday morning cartoon (remember Saturday morning cartoons?). I remember him from the old WWF (now the WWE), his song on The Wrestling Album (“Captain Lou, Captain Lou, Al-BAN-oh”), and of course his appearance in Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” video. That’s him playing Cyndi’s father, yelling “what you gonna do with your life” when the phone rings in the middle of night.
Also dead this week: Financier Bruce Wasserstein (61), and Al Martino, the actor who played Johnny Fontane in “The Godfather.”
Wasserstein leaves behind a young daughter who was born “in between marriages” as the New York Post put it in February of this year, and also his late sister Wendy Wasserstein’s daughter, who he adopted after the playwright’s death. Sad.
Some say that there is “little reason to panic” when it comes to the swine flu, aka the H1N1 virus, aka Heinie. (Get it? H1N1? HiNi? Heinie? Not working? Darn.)
Rush Limbaugh is out of the group that is trying to buy the St. Louis Rams. Let me make this clear, again — this is not a case of “liberals discriminatng against Rush Limbaugh.” The NFL has the right, by its own rules, to vote against someone buying one of their teams. It was decided that Limbaugh was a liabiity, because of things he has said over the years, and the reactions of various people to those statements. Those statements are the reason that Limbaugh has enough money to buy an NFL team (with some other folks — NFL teams are very expensive). As Mike Greenberg pointed out this morning on ESPN Radio, this is not about ideaology, this is about business. (Greenberg also said that Limbaugh knows this to be the case and is just stirring the pot to get ratings, as he always does. I agree.)
Despite the tone of the above report from Fox Business, that’s how capitalism works. Don’t you like capitalism? What are you, a socialist?
And finally, ‘30 Rock’ returns tonight to begin its fourth season. Fourth? I feel old.
