Parents Jailed for the Old “Eat Soap for Cursing” Trick
It was like a scene out of A Christmas Story - an eight-year-old girl said a bad word, so Mom put soap in her mouth to wash the filthy words out.
So why are Mom and her boyfriend now sitting in jail?
Florida cops have charged Wilfredo Rivera and Adriyanna Herdener with neglect of a child and child abuse, and the Florida Department of Children and Families has taken the girl and a younger sibling into custody.
Over soap? Really?
The cops told a Florida newspaper the parents became concerned when the kid started to complain about pain in her throat after ten minutes of chewing on the soap. Mom first gave the child cough syrup hoping it would help. When it didn’t, the boyfriend (who apparently suggested the soap trick to begin with) took her to the hospital.
The kid, who suffers from asthma, was reportedly wheezing at the hospital and had a swollen lip. Still, he took her TO the hospital. He didn’t leave her lying in bed suffering.
Past practices of generations of parents don’t always translate into today’s society. You wouldn’t show up at your child’s school tomorrow to give them a spanking in front of the whole class (our grandparents, however, wouldn’t have batted an eye at the idea). Ten minutes of eating soap sounds excessive, and the swollen lip is suspicious.
But is the old soap trick out of style? Do you still use it?

Va Mommy commented on Oct 13 09 at 9:30 amI can remember my grandmother doing it to my cousins. I don’t think its a good thing to do though. I won’t be doing that to my kids when they swear.
Stella commented on Oct 13 09 at 10:25 amGranted, my husband got the ol soap in the mouth but we won’t be doing that with our own kids for our own reasons. But calling the cops on parents who do? Not worth it.
Sabrina commented on Oct 13 09 at 11:44 amThe soap-on-the-mouth thing was intended to be a SWIPE or small TASTE of something nasty, not chewing on a bar of soap for ten minutes. That’s excessive in my book.
Have you ever tasted soap? I have. Blech! How that child managed to chew it for 10 minutes and not vomit is beyond me.
snarky mama commented on Oct 13 09 at 1:11 pmI’ve done it, but it was more like a lick than a chew. Gross. And I still curse. Eff that.
Mistress_Scorpio commented on Oct 13 09 at 2:37 pmThey should have used the breastmilk soap!
Ali commented on Oct 13 09 at 4:38 pmJust a bite or two will cause diarrhea and the cehmicals in most soaps will start an asthma attack. He got the bruised lip from where she jammed it into his mouth. He probably did vomit, a lot, it is very alkaline.
Andrea commented on Oct 13 09 at 6:36 pmMy parents used vinegar, which did the trick nicely.
jenny tries too hard commented on Oct 14 09 at 5:54 pmMy parents did a pinch on the end of your tongue for lying, cursing or sticking out your tongue. Worked pretty well.
Ri-chan commented on Oct 15 09 at 6:13 pmI know a woman who did that to her child and he got vilontly ill, it can really hurt you, I think they deserve a little jail time, it’s a stupid thing to do.
Ness commented on Oct 23 09 at 11:45 amMy mom told me my grandparents used to do that to her. But not for ten freaking minutes! Thats absurd. Then again i can’t really complain, onetime when i was ten i slipped and said the ‘f’ word and my mom put a jalapeno in my mouth for like ten seconds. It did work though cause i’m 19 and I still don’t use bad words.
