Morning News – Mayans Say No Doomsday in 2012
In case you were gearing up for the end of the world on December 12, 2012 (12/12/12, get it?), Mayan elder Apolinario Chile Pixtun says you should get over yourself.“I came back from England last year and, man, they had me fed up with this stuff,” he told the Associated Press. But there’s a movie coming out called 2012! Movies don’t lie. Here’s the trailer if you’re curious.
The Chicago Cubs filed for Chapter 11. Huh? Someone will buy the team, though.
Those of you who are hiding money in offshore bank accounts, circle the date “October 15″ on your gold-plated daily planner. That’s the deadline to tell the IRS what you’ve got hidden under your Swiss mattress.
The video of second-graders at B. Bernice Young Elementary School singing a song about President Obama that was posted on YouTube, sparking a lot of sturm und drang in the conservative community? It’s not clear how it ended up going public, since nobody asked the parents’ permission to post it online, according to Philly.com. Big violation of the students’ privacy. Could it be that someone had a political agenda? No!
I wrote about yesterday’s protest about that song here. Another tidbit: “The rally was organized by Ocean County resident Fredy Lowe, a supporter of the anti-tax Tea Party political protest group, at the behest of Gina Pronchick, whose son was a member of the class that was videotaped.” According to the school, when the students sang the song back in February, lyrics were sent home and no parent complained. Does this mean that Ms. Pronchick didn’t know about the song until someone told her? Interesting question that no one seems to be asking.
Nice quote from columnist Eugene Kane in the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel: “It was just a small reminder that we live in interesting times in regards to the 44th president of the United States. Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize last week and almost nobody thought to congratulate the guy! As my mother would say: ‘Where are your manners?’”
And California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill that creates Harvey Milk Day. Follow that link for a video there of George Takei and his husband Brad Altman appearing on The Newlywed Game. Or you can watch it right here:
Sulu got married! George and Brad played a version of The Newlywed Game on The Howard Stern Show on Sirius/XM Radio. That version was a little bit racier.
