Teacher Fired for Being Transgender
All he wanted was for kids to call him “Mr.” instead of Mrs. Instead Jan Buterman lost his job as a substitute teacher because school district officials say “a person cannot change their gender.”
Guess what folks – he just did.
Butterman informed the Canadian school district where he was teaching that he was undergoing the transition from female to male, and he’d like a change in the formalities attached to the job – a simple change of prefix.
Backed by the Catholic church, the district balked, with the district’s deputy superintendent sending Buterman a letter to accompany his firing that noted “One’s gender is considered what God created us to be.”
A sad misunderstanding of what transgender actually means on the part of the school district. But equally disturbing is the letter’s insistence that the change “would create confusions and complexity with students and parents.”
Way to sell your kids short there school officials! There are the obvious lessons about acceptance and love (hello church teachings!), but the science behind being trans is fascinating – and a great jumping off point for kids to study how the brain works, hormones, etc.
Not to mention, when I look for a good teacher, I’m thinking good with kids, passionate about teaching, loves learning. If you call them Mr., Mrs. or hey you, it matters little. If they can impart knowledge, they’re worth keeping.
