Newborn Baby Survives Fall from Train Toilet
Though Rinku Rai knew she was pregnant, the very pregnant 30-year-old didn’t realize that she was in labor.
Traveling by train with her husband and four-year-old daughter to visit relatives, Rai went to use the Tata-Chapra Express bathroom. What you might not know about trains in India is this: The toilets empty directly onto the tracks.
Rai found herself suddenly and shockingly giving birth on the toilet, as the newborn baby boy fell through the hole and onto the train tracks below.
Those mama bear hormones are a force to be reckoned with. Rai wasted no time in leaping off the moving express train to go find her baby boy. “The baby came out, chord, placenta and all,” Rai told The Independent. “But before I could realise what had happened, it slipped through the hole. I became hysterical, came out of the toilet and jumped from the train.”
Both mother and baby were miraculously unhurt. The train stopped a mile up the tracks after someone pulled the emergency break after seeing her jump. Mother and child reboarded and health care workers met the family at the next stop.
Rai’s husband spoke of his baby’s amazing birth and his brave, superhero wife. “I still cannot believe it. When I realised Rinku had jumped out of the train, I gave up all hope of seeing her alive,” he said. “I can only thank God for keeping my family intact, with a bonus.”
Any labor and delivery is exciting, but few come even close to this one. Share your memorable birth stories with us.
