Why’s a Baby Boozing on this Billboard?

beerbillboard 300x225 Whys a Baby Boozing on this Billboard?A big picture of a baby drinking a beer might turn heads, but is it really  going to make teenagers stop drinking?

Connecticut State Police officers think a billboard with a boozing baby and the words “You wouldn’t do this then . . . why now” is going to turn teens into teetotalers.

Created by Together We Can Coalition to Stop Underage Drinking, the billboard also shows two depressed looking teenagers and the warning that underage drinking is never safe.

And somehow I see more kids cracking wise about why the teens look so depressed (no more vodka? out of Skittles for that malt beverage?) than I do teens simpering over a cute little baby and acting on a sudden urge to get sober.

So who is this billboard going to upset? Parents. Most of whom will say “awww, cute baby,” and move on.

Think this will work on teens?

I look at it and wonder – so who’s letting that cute baby teethe on a beer bottle? (There are oodles of pics along that line in my family…that and hockey pucks!)

Hehe – mine too Plumb. I chipped my first tooth chugging on an EMPTY wine bottle.

I think it’s pretty clear that the ad is targeting parents, particularly parents who provide their underage kids with alcohol. Because it would never tell teens to stop. You try and tell a teen to think of themselves as a little baby and see where that gets you.

I just can’t get over how ridiculous the message is. What does a baby have to do with it? Are we telling teenagers they’re the same as babies? There are lots of things you wouldn’t give a baby that you’d give a teenager. Like solid food. And toys with small pieces. And car keys. I agree that if they’re targeting parent who still think their teenagers are babies, it might be effective, but you’re basically insulting the teenagers by telling them they are indistinguishable from babies.

“I’m not a baby! I can drink!”

I would just like to announce, publicly, how dazzled I am by the insight and wry wit of this blog’s writers and readership. Bravo. This is all very original and productive and I just want to let you all know that your talents and intellect are not going unnoticed. Sigh… I feel giddy. Anyway, please continue.

The billboard isn’t intended for teens, but for their parents. What it’s really saying is You…the parent of a teenager…wouldn’t give alcohol to your baby so why do you think it’s okay to give it to your teen? I thought the message was pretty clear.
