They Say: Far More Kids are Exposed to Violence Than Previously Thought
You hate to think of a kid witnessing or worse, experiencing violence. But according to a shocking report from the Justice Department, 60 percent of children are exposed to violence, either directly or indirectly.
University of New Hampshire researchers conducted the study, and defined exposure to violence as being a victim, having witnessed violence, or learning about violence against a relative or friend, or hearing about a threat to their school or home. That’s a pretty broad definition, but it’s still a disturbing number.
The study went on to find that nearly half of kids report being physically assaulted, while 10 percent said they were harmed by a caregiver, 6 percent said they were sexually assaulted, and another ten percent witnessed an assault within their family.
According to an article from AllHeadlineNews.com, David Finkelhor, director of the University of New Hampshire Crimes Against Children Center, said in a statement that if adults were exposed to the same violence as children, “we’d never tolerate it.”
The study included a representative sample of children and their parents, but none of the stories I found had anything about the methodology, how many kids were studied, or too much other detail. Still, this is one of those things that if it’s even half true, is still pretty awful.

http://www.unh.edu/ccrc/pdf/Pediatrics_NatSCEV.pdf“The study was based on a cross-sectional national telephone
survey that involved a target sample of 4549 children aged 0 to
17 years.”Yikes… this is scary stuff.
