A Gallery of Baby Poop? Yuck!
One of the more, um, humbling things about parenting is the fact that you find yourself having a lot of conversations about poop. And usually, not even your own poop.
But a whole photo gallery of poop? Like, opening up the diaper and instead of disposing of its contents as fast as possible, whipping out the point-and-shoot? And then posting your work on the Internet to share with everyone in the world (“Good morning, Grandma! Here’s little Christopher’s latest!!”)? That’s more than a little nasty.
But the good folks at Boing Boing shared this: a photo gallery, yes, gallery, of healthy baby poop. Glahhhhhhh. That’s one for href=”http://stfuparents.tumblr.com/”>STFU, Parents! Which alerted me to a similar item on Babycenter.
All of this poses the question: What is WRONG with people? Are we that clueless, as parents? Really?
Admittedly I hate poop talk –I got three pages into “Everyone Poops” before I was too horrified and had to put it down. And one of my most embarrassing moments was paging the pediatrican because my baby’s poop was black, and then bringing in the diaper the next day for her to see (although we both got a good laugh out of how completely mortified I was to do so). And some people are calling this a public service. Ahhhh, no. Police officers? Firefighters? Librarians? That’s public service. This? This is more than a little bit weird and gross.

Andrea commented on Oct 09 09 at 9:31 amI don’t know, as a first time parent, the Babycenter gallery actually saved me a couple of would-be embarrassing calls to friends or my doctor when I got worried. I don’t think it’s just for fun.
Jen commented on Oct 09 09 at 11:42 amI hear what you’re saying…But, for what it’s worth, this picture gallery actually could have helped my son. My son was diagnosed with a rare liver disease (biliary atresia) when he was 9-weeks-old. The pediatrician’s office kept telling us for weeks that his pale yellow stools were normal – but they really were a sign that his liver was failing. When he was finally diagnosed due to me insisting that something seemed wrong, his liver specialist showed us a card with pictures of normal and abnormal stools. My son’s yellow ones were definitely too pale. I know this obviously doesn’t happen often but it might have helped us and our pediatrician catch this earlier and possibly put off his need for a liver transplant a bit longer. I wish they gave those abnormal/normal pictures to every pediatrician and parent.
Em commented on Oct 09 09 at 5:06 pmIt’s not a situation where a parent (or parents) are taking a picture of every poop. It’s not a situation where parents are posting baby poop on their blog or Facebook or whatever. It’s a website that intends to be a resource to parents showing what normal poop looks like so that parents don’t freak when they see something they didn’t expect in the diaper. This is much different than what you seem to be implying it is.
Jennifer commented on Oct 09 09 at 11:07 pmI don’t think that you described that link very well at all. Also you seem silly. Perhaps you knew everything there was to know about babies before you had one, but you’d be pretty unique. “Clueless” is a bit of a harsh term to use when no doubt all parents are ignorant about one thing or another, which is why parents tend to talk to each other. Is that not the whole point of this blog?
It seems to me that if you couldn’t get through more than three pages into Everyone Poops, the problem is not so much that parents are hovering over open diapers hoping to catch one in action, the problem is that you are squeamish.
