Saddest Little Girl in the US [PIC]
Did you ever have one of those days when you’re innocently wasting valuable work time spying on friends via Facebook and then a post hits you in the gut?
I blame my friend Sandy for this one - once you see it, you’ll blame her too. First, pull out the tissues.
![little-girl-and-soldier little girl and soldier 300x225 Saddest Little Girl in the US [PIC]](http://blogs.babble.com/strollerderby/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/little-girl-and-soldier-300x225.jpg)
See what I mean? According to the story at NBC of Philadelphia that goes along with the photo, little Paige Bennethum, a four-year-old, refused to let go of her father’s hand as he was lining up to be shipped off the Iraq.
Unable to break a four-year-old’s heart further, the commanding officer pretended not to notice a little blondie in a patchwork dress in the midst of his fatigue clad soldiers. He allowed the little girl her goodbye on her terms at Fort Dix.
Daddy won’t be home until next July, and Paige is now home with her pregnant mom and little sister. How many tissues did you just blow through?

Get a Grip commented on Oct 07 09 at 6:37 pmWhy weep over cogs in the war machine? Americans fucking disgust me.
Mistress_Scorpio commented on Oct 07 09 at 7:35 pmIgnoring the troll.
I wish that soldier, his fellow soldiers and all military personnel a safe and swift return to their loved ones.
cavale commented on Oct 07 09 at 8:45 pmyeah. i agree with “Get a Grip”.
call me a troll, if you will. but that’s how i feel.
Lee commented on Oct 07 09 at 9:17 pmAmerica is the “land of the free” because of these brave servicemembers. Enjoy it Get a Grip, cavale.
jenny tries too hard commented on Oct 07 09 at 9:29 pmso a preschooler is a cog in a war machine….if you can truly dehumanize those fighting and sacrificing on your behalf, what can you really love and enjoy in this world?

I can relate to this story more than I would like to.I’m not sure why someone like Get a Grip needs to dehumanize others in order to feel superior. My husband is not a cog. He is a decent and intelligent person who is interested in using his engineering talents to try to make a bad situation better. He is exactly the kind of person you would want representing us in another country.
I’m proud that he is willing to put his life on the line to ensure people like Get a Grip have the freedom to speak freely, even if he or she has nothing compassionate to say.
fearspeaking commented on Oct 08 09 at 1:43 amThat is soo sad..i kind of sympathize with the kid..
Brett Singer commented on Oct 08 09 at 8:44 amThat’s a sad picture. No matter how you feel about the war, or war in general, you should be able to have sympathy for a little girl who’s going to miss her dad. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m getting a little verklempt… talk amongst yourselves… the Beastie Boys are neither beasts, nor boys… discuss…
Rosana commented on Oct 08 09 at 9:17 amI think is sad but doubt that she is the saddest girl in America. Hope she gets to understand her dad’s job soon so she can hurts less. God Bless that Family.
Bec commented on Oct 08 09 at 10:02 amJust to be devil’s advocate, I’ll point out that some Babble readers aren’t American. It’s possible that these soldiers aren’t actually protecting Get A Grip’s freedom.
I wish those soldiers a safe return, too. I just also wish they don’t have to kill too many people to pull it off.
jeannesager commented on Oct 08 09 at 10:05 amI find the cog in the machine comments most interesting because this is a picture that could just as easily be grasped by a liberal as a conservative.
Liberal: “look at the awful side effects of war.”
Conservative: “look at that wonderful man fighting for our freedom.”
Either way, a kid is missing her dad. If he was leaving for a business trip to Montana, it would still be sad.

Marj commented on Oct 08 09 at 1:18 pmThe concept of people as cogs is exactly what is wrong with the world. Every one of those figures in fatigues are unique people, not interchangeable pieces on a chess board. Even if that’s how they are being used, that is not what they are.
korinthia commented on Oct 08 09 at 2:26 pm@ Bec
Good point about not all Babble readers being American. That’s actually why I said people ‘like’ Get a Grip. I don’t even think my husband being in Iraq is protecting our freedom here right now. But as a soldier he is willing to defend us, and I admire that.I just hope Get a Grip is trying to be provocative under the veil of anonymity to amuse him or herself, and not truly dismissing the obvious pain of a small child. It’s not helping anyone.
