Rich or Rehab: The Kid From ‘The Shining’
In honor of October — the year’s most ghoulish, Halloweeny time — every Rich or Rehab this month will focus on kids who starred in scary movies.
Our first horror star: Danny Lloyd, the young boy who mumbled some stuff about “redrum” and darted through a maze to escape from a psychotic Jack Nicholson in “The Shining.” What happened to him after his uneventful and delightful stay at Stanley Kubrick’s version of the Overlook Hotel?
We’ll get to that. But first, a couple of fun facts. Lloyd landed his one and only major motion picture role, as Danny Torrance in 1980′s “The Shining,” at the age of 6. One might assume that working on a movie this creepy at such a young age would pretty much ruin a kid for life. But reportedly, Kubrick was able to shoot Lloyd’s scenes in a way that made him unaware he was appearing in a horror movie. (Here’s hoping he kept him away from those twins. I am sure they’re lovely girls in real life, but holy crap, are they freaky.)
After “The Shining,” Lloyd added just one more acting gig to his resume: portraying a young G. Gordon Liddy in the 1982 TV movie “Will: The Autobiography of G. Gordon Liddy.” (I could make a horror movie joke here but, ahem, I will refrain.)
It’s unclear where Lloyd spent his high school and college years, but it appears that he eventually went into teaching. According to Wikipedia and several other Web sites, he worked as a science teacher in the midwest for a few years, then became a biology professor at a Kentucky community college and, as of the end of 2007, was teaching hard sciences somewhere in Missouri.
Clearly Lloyd has left his acting days far, far behind and is trying to maintain a low profile. We’ll respect his privacy, while also showing some respect to the child he used to be in the video — an excerpt from an excellent documentary about “The Shining” — that’s embedded below this more recent photo of him. Honestly, watch that video and tell me: how cute was that poor, little semi-terrorized kid??
