Facebook “Kill Obama” Poll Was Created by a Child
When a Facebook using a third-party application created a poll asking the question “Should Obama be killed?”, Secret Service agents took the implied threat very seriously.
They shut down the application — which included choices like “yes,” “maybe,” and “if he cuts my health care” — removed the poll, and went searching for it’s user. Their “man” hunt turned up a surprise, though: The poll creator was a child.
Authorities are keeping mum about the details — they won’t share the child’s age or gender, for instance. But they have said that no criminal charges will be filed. “Case closed,” Secret Service spokesman Edwin Donovan said in a statement. “I guess you could characterize it as a mistake.”
Insert awkward chuckle here. “Just a mistake! Nothing to see here! Just a little threat against the President’s life.” If the poll was written by a younger child (which I suspect, given the Secret Service’s ambivalence) then maybe they should be taking a closer look at his or her parents. The kids I know rarely worry about health care enough to consider assassination.
Really, people. Go ahead and disagree with the President; it is your right after all. But whether there’s a Democrat or Republican President, shouldn’t we be teaching our kids to respect the office even if they disagree with the man/woman? To debate the issues with a little civility, instead of ignorance and blind threats?
Because no matter how you feel about the politics, Barack Obama is a human being. He’s also a husband and a father. Teaching kids that it’s okay to wish for his untimely death because you disagree with him is wrong — because he’s the President and because it’s a parent’s job to teach kids how to handle conflict in an appropriate manner.
What do you think?

Maria commented on Oct 03 09 at 2:28 pmI think it’s absolutely horrifying how extremist and militant the far Right in this country has become since President Obama was elected. There is a real threat to this country right now, and it’s not health care reform. It’s ideological extremists who think that they can use violence (either real or implied) to get their way.
Vee commented on Oct 03 09 at 4:58 pmI used to be sympathetic to the Conservative right (after all, I was raised in it), now they just disgust me with their extremism and violent words/actions. They have ensured me to Never come back to their “side” again.
Completely disgusting.
Mistress_Scorpio commented on Oct 03 09 at 7:37 pmReally? All some kid’s fault? Somehow I’m not buying it…
Lisa commented on Oct 04 09 at 2:56 pmHOw was this any more a threat on Obama’s life than the massives numbers of more explicit kill Bush posters we saw over the years?
jenny tries too hard commented on Oct 04 09 at 6:50 pmGood question, Lisa. Neither is okay, of course….still, I wondered the same thing when I saw people getting outraged at the Obama-Joker poster and the Obama=Hitler poster because both were first anti-Bush posters. Neither was okay, but to act as though conservatives wing nuts are any wingnuttier than liberal wingnuts is just dishonest. Each side has its crazies.
Maria commented on Oct 05 09 at 12:08 am“massives numbers of more explicit kill Bush posters we saw over the years” ???
What? Links, please. If anyone had done this to Bush while he was in office, they would have been labeled a terrorist, and thrown in Guantanamo Bay.
Dad commented on Oct 05 09 at 9:08 amYeah, I don’t remember similar Bush posters. if they really existed, it would definitely not be okay. I would like to see if these are real, or just another thing Glen Beck made up…
jenny tries too hard commented on Oct 05 09 at 9:09 amMaria, a movie was made explicitly about assasinating Bush and was shown at high profile film festivals in the states….and there were many such things on the internet. Do quick google, and you’ll see.
Maria commented on Oct 05 09 at 3:45 pmI believe the movie you are referring to is “Death of a President”, a British faux documentary, not an American movie. In fact, although the movie had a very short and not very successful run in US theaters, it didn’t show at any major film festivals in the US (unless you think Toronto is in the United States). “Death of a President” was also widely and loudly denounced by prominent Democrats, including Hillary Clinton who said, “I think it’s despicable. I think it’s absolutely outrageous. That anyone would even attempt to profit on such a horrible scenario makes me sick”.
The difference is that during the Bush administration, when people suggested violence or harm should come to the President, they were quickly, and rightly denounced. Now, they are given a voice on Glenn Beck or The O’Reilly, and treated like American patriots.
But, you still haven’t provided any proof or links to supposed widespread posters calling for the assassination of Bush. I’m still waiting Jenny. Maybe you’re not trying hard enough.
jenny tries too hard commented on Oct 05 09 at 6:10 pmgoogle kill bush, bush hitler poster, bush joker poster etc…my wonky computer is not letting me post links. I lived in SF in 07 and man o man did the protesters come up with some crazy signs, too. And as far as “Death Of A President” you are correct, I was wrong, it was given theater release not shown in festivals. Still, the fact that it was shown at all, and *gasp* none of the theater owners, managers, patrons, etc. were “thrown in Gitmo” or had any other action taken gives the lie to your grossly hyperbolic statement about “if it was Bush”. Would you care to link Beck or O’Reilly’s endorsement of violence? I don’t follow either one, much, (cuz they’re not, y’know, politicians) but I do know both of them denounced the murder of abortion doc George Tiller, despite both being extremely pro-life, for what that’s worth.

But I”m certain you will deny it or pretend it wasn’t real.
jenny tries too hard commented on Oct 05 09 at 6:22 pmlets try that again…

jenny tries too hard commented on Oct 05 09 at 6:23 pmthanks lisa!
and this time I googled bush protest san francisco….this was the first thing that came up
Lisa commented on Oct 05 09 at 6:26 pmDon’t forget all the Bush as Chimp websites, shirts and posters.
OH and I can’t stand both Bush and Obama; they are both incompetent baboons.
Mistress_Scorpio commented on Oct 05 09 at 8:38 pmYes. Chimp posters of Bush are exactly like polls to kill Obama. And carrying guns outside of events where the POTUS is to appear is just people exercising their rights. It’s all the same. Just keep nodding your head to the beat, we all know the words to the moral equivalence song.
Lisa commented on Oct 05 09 at 8:49 pmWas it a crime to carry that gun? No. Oddly enough, the MSM used that as another example of how racist conservatives are.. only the man carrying those weapons was black.
And do you remember the hue and cry last year over the ape cartoon which actually was targeting Congress? Oh that was so racist but the very clear Bush=chimp stuff was just fine.
The double standard is disgusting.
jenny tries too hard commented on Oct 05 09 at 9:05 pmwow…conservatives are the ones that practice moral equivalence? That a pretty standard liberal tactic, imo. But while we’re comparing presidents, I will say this about Obama vs. Bush. Bush embodied the worst of both parties, channeling social conservatives with his Defense Of Marriage Act craziness, and tax-and-spend liberals with his Medicare drug travesty and first round of bailout/stimulus nightmare. Obama only embodies the worst elements of one party.
Lisa commented on Oct 05 09 at 9:08 pmJenny… I dunno about that. Obama hasn’t change the worst of Bush’s policies and he’s got his own brand of nastiness and incompetence. I think they are both the worst of American politics.
Mistress_Scorpio commented on Oct 05 09 at 11:26 pmDidn’t say any party had a lock on moral equivalance, but y’all just go right on with your happy fun time echo chamber. And Lisa, although the only image Glen Beck shows is of the black guy with the gun, he wasn’t the first and wasn’t the last. Of course, That One Black Guy With A Gun might as well be a talisman for all the conservatives who want to convince themselves that the level to which their protest has sunk is beyond reproach. I hear that one example get pulled out so often. Gee, look who’s got a Magical Negro now?
jenny tries too hard commented on Oct 06 09 at 7:49 amThe black guy with the gun was the only person visibly armed at that rally. MSNBC deliberately cropped out his face and hands because he did not fit their image of “Gun Owner Threat To Obama” I would not have brought Bush into this if someone else hadn’t pulled the What Would Bush Do (WWBD). Look, I don’t like the “Kill Obama” poll or the “Kill Bush” memorabilia. The thing I really hate, though, is to see what was either ignorance or dishonesty go unchallenged. To say that Bush would’ve “thrown in Guantanamo” citizens exercising their time-honored right to free speech (and hanging/burning leaders in effigy has long history in this country, starting with King George and continuing with most of the early presidents, experiencing a real rebirth in the Vietnam era) is either a lie, or someone who didn’t check a newspaper, a news broadcast, or, in some areas of the country, look out the window from 2001-2008. Two people disagreeing with the rest of a thread is not an echo chamber—-it’s *gasp* a debate. And y’know what, I think, if we’re adults, we can talk about race without pulling “Magical Negro” out of the garbage can and dusting it off.
Mistress_Scorpio commented on Oct 06 09 at 10:11 amGo search the interwebs for the other incidents of guns being brought to events regarding this president. Or stay willfully ignorant. It doesn’t matter if you are going to hold fast to the truth that affirms your worldview, rather than the sometimes ugly facts. And there’s not so much dust on the Magical Negro term as you think. A year ago, conservatives were circulating a song by that title regarding the current POTUS. If you knew the origin of the term, you’d get the reference.
jenny tries too hard commented on Oct 06 09 at 10:41 amThe song, disgusting as it was, referred to liberals attitude of the President, that by being the first black President and remarkably well-spoken and charismatic, he would magically unite the nation and indeed the world I get the reference, that black roles in early cinema were that of the Magic Negro. The idea that someone “exotic” might hold a special power. I don’t get how that sterotype fits the gun owner who thought it worthwhile to make a spectacle of himself in Arizona—he was a man exercising his rights in an attention whore-ish way, whom MSNBC deliberately misrepresented by insinuating that he was white and/or violent. That’s really neither here nor there, though. The President should never be threatened, agreed. I think facebook polls, burning in effigy, etc. though hardly warrant a credible threat, and like flag burning, and other forms of protest I disagree with must be respected in a free society.
Mistress_Scorpio commented on Oct 06 09 at 11:37 amTry this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magical_negro
Early cinema = as recently as 2007?
And about 12 people were carrying guns at that Arizona event. The one that everyone remembers is the black guy, because he was A) carrying an AR-15 assault rifle and B) it was a black guy. The media likes to maintain the illusion that we’re always wired to think alike, and when one “goes rouge” in their view, it’s as fascinating as a Jesus appearing on a grilled cheese sandwich.
jenny tries too hard commented on Oct 06 09 at 11:42 amAs I said…visibly armed.
Marj commented on Oct 06 09 at 5:37 pmI’ve seen pictures, the black guy wasn’t even the only guy with an assault rifle. There was a thin white guy with a hat, too.
