My favorite part of school was always back-to-school shopping. The classes, schedules, books — they paled in comparison to the new shoes, clothes and a closet-full of accessories that screamed, “I just want to fit in. Please, dear god, let me fit in.”
As an adult, I’m mortified by the younger me, and I desperately don’t want my daughter to fall into the same fashion/ peer pressure hell I fell into. And yet, despite growing up in an era when the top song was “Materially Girl,” I fear the environment has only grown worse since I was in school.
In one of her latest “Target Women” videos, Current’s Sarah Haskins deftly sums up the back-to-school culture of today’s kids. It’s all about “bling-a-tude”
Mocks Haskins, “I have AP English and I haven’t even read my US Weekly yet!”
How on earth do parents combat this?
