First Lady Celebrates Sesame Street

Michelle Obama on Sesame Street
On November 10, 1969, a television show unlike any other debuted on PBS. Based on the idea that if you could hold the attention of children, you could educate them, the program introduced kids to a grouchy green creature who lived in a garbage can and an oversized yellow bird. That show, of course, was Sesame Street. Forty years later, the program that forever changed children’s television is celebrating with a brand new look and a VIP quest.
On the November 10 Sesame Street season premiere, First Lady Michelle Obama joins Elmo and a basket of animated produce to talk about the benefits of planting a garden and eating healthy food. Her appearance is part of the show’s “Healthy Habits for Life” initiative and was taped last May. At the time, Mrs. Obama declared the experience to be “probably the best thing I’ve done at the White House.”
Mrs. Obama isn’t the only celebrity who thinks Sesame Street is cool. The show has long been a destination for high-profile stars and this year is no exception. Some of the celebs slated to appear on upcoming shows are Jimmy Fallon, Ricky Gervais, Greg Kinnear and Meredith Vieira. Since most of these celebs are unknown to Sesame Street’s target audience, they are clearly intended to entice parents into watching with their kids. Does it work? Do you watch Sesame Street for the real-world celebrities? Or is Elmo enough to keep you coming back for more?

Bev commented on Oct 08 09 at 8:46 amI love watching Sesame Street with my daughter. I can’t tell you the number of songs I’ve looked up on You Tube to be able to sing to her. However, I really enjoy it when celebrities are on, and I especially enjoy “inside jokes” when something references adult culture (but still in the sensitive and age appropriate way for which Sesame Street is known). It is also really nice when you can tell a celebrity was comfortable or having fun in his or her appearance. Here I’m thinking of Brian Williams last season when he reported on the case of “mine-itis” going around Sesame Street. Very funny.
