A Boy Named Q

letter q 250x250 A Boy Named QOh, those wacky Swedes!  Following the selection of such names as Lego, Ikea, and Metallica, a Swedish couple has won the right (in court, no less!) to name their baby Q.  No, that’s not short for Quentin, Quinn, or even Quark.  It’s just Q, as in the letter in between P and R.

It’s not clear whether the parents named the boy after the gadget master of the James Bond universe or the omnipotent but annoying character from the Star Trek world, or even if they just really like the seventeenth letter of the alphabet.  In any case, the Swedish Supreme Administrative Court (The Regeringsrätten) has spoken, overruling two lower courts to give the parents what they want — a boy named Q.

Personally, I don’t see a problem with unusual names.  If my kids had gotten their way, my youngest son would be named either Sweetie Pie Butterfly or Firebaby.  Or possibly William Shakespeare Sinasohn.  Alas, our highest court (my wife and mother-in-law) overruled the kids and went with Ezra.  So what’s the most unusual name you’ve encountered?  Did you consider any ultra-cool names for your kids?

My nephews are Orion and Cyrus. A friend of mine has a daughter name Ahnier. The weirdest name we considered for our son was Kellen. In college, another friend of mine had a brother named H. I guess each grandfather had a name beginning with H, so rather than choose between the names, they just went with H.

i plan on naming my kids some really exotic things.

but, i have to share this anecdote:
one day i was just waking up in the morning in my tent at a Rainbow Gathering, and i overheard a conversation between two people walking by.

“so, what’s your name again?”
“it’s q”
“oh, cool. so, ‘q’ like the letter, or c-u-e?”
“no, it’s ‘q’, like k-i-e-w.”
