Breastfeeding for Men

s181339907 Breastfeeding for MenTurns out there are many men today who want to breastfeed and are looking to science to make it possible. For instance, Reglan, an acid-reflux medication, could make male lactation a possibility. Is that in the list of side effects? Is that a case of the cure being worse than the disease? “Congrats Doug, your acid reflux is gone but now you have two milk-bearing breasts. Good luck with that.”

Despite your (and my) knee jerk reaction to the idea of men breastfeeding, doctors claim it is entirely possible. In fact, as far back as 1858, explorer David Livingston documented the story of a man whose wife had been put to death and how the man, grief stricken and desperate, put his baby to his “breast” and–viola!-he lactated.

Yark.

Hey, here’s a whole video to help us get started with the male breastfeeding thing.

Um, why is the breast milk expert in a bath tub? Do you think it took a lot of convincing to get that breast milk expert to do the whole video in a bath tub or was it totally her idea? Did she bring the bath tub with her? Am I trying to change the subject?

I hope more men breastfeed. Women should not have to do all of the work. Besides, it might finally desexualize the breast, what every breatfeeding mom wants.

Agree with Ali. As for the Reglan, my gyn prescribed it because I was having supply issues. The pediatrician, however, discouraged me from using Reglan. WHO and the AAP have expressed concern about breastfeeding infants being exposed to the drug.
