Midwives Make Plea for Soft Fake Breasts
Some midwives in the U.K. are looking for handcrafted boobs. Ideally, they’d like soft, supple ones that are easy to see and fun to look at. Well what breasts aren’t?
But keep your shirts on. They want fake boobs (sit down, Ms. Anderson, they want single wool ones in fun, surprising colors) and lots of them.
The knitted breasts are used to teach young mothers how to breastfeed. Apparently, plastic dummies have a “sticky sensation to them,” which is less than ideal.
Why not use the real thing?
From This is Lincolnshire:
“If a mother is being shown how to breast feed on her own body, then when she looks down she can’t see if the baby is attached properly.
“If someone is sitting showing the mother with a doll and a fake boob, then they can show the action the baby is going to take and the correct way to hold the baby.
Well, then, grab some needles!

I don’t believe I’d read or heard of the movement in the UK, but it’s nice to know that there are like minds around and that it’s an idea that actually *works*. Now, to just find the attention span to learn needlecraft…
Rosana commented on Sep 30 09 at 2:13 pmWhy not bring a currently breastfeeding mother in? They can get an agreement with an organization like La Leche Leage or similar and ask for volunteers.
mystic_eye_cda commented on Oct 26 09 at 12:49 pmWhen you *are* breastfeeding the only angle you get is with the baby attached. And that’s all you really need.
Its really more important that mom gets an appropriately weighted and floppy doll if she is going to practice fake breastfeeding.
Maggie commented on May 31 11 at 1:07 pmI’m a young Midwife, starting to lead my own Antenatal Classes, and I desperately want a ‘soft fake boob’ too… I’ve seen one available to buy but it’s far too pricey… I’m well able for needle craft, I’m just wondering if the knitting pattern or instructions could be passed on to me???? I’d actually love you for ever!!!!
