Disney Offers Subscription eBooks For Kids

toy story book 150x150 Disney Offers Subscription eBooks For KidsDisney is now offering a new subscription service called Disney Digital Books. For $8.95/month (or $79.95/year), you and your kids will be able to access more than 500 “new and classic Disney books,” according to the company.

The New York Times says that the new site is aimed at children aged 3 to 12, and offers various titles ranging from picture books to chapter books. Readers can also click on an unfamiliar word to hear it read out loud.

Yves Saada, Disney’s vice president of digital media, told the Times that “For parents, this isn’t going to replace snuggle time with a storybook. We think you can have different reading formats co-existing together.” Which makes sense — we subscribe to two print newspapers in our house, and also read blogs and other content online.

I know that my children are less hesitant than I am to read on a computer screen. Gizmodo points out that the service would be better on a full color Kindle-type of e-book reader (a commenter that a Kindle for kids could be called a “Kiddle”). And while I am personally hesitant to add yet another monthly entertainment/technology charge to our arsenal (Internet, cell phone, cable TV, Netflix), if you buy a lot of books this isn’t a bad deal. It also takes up less room.

Interesting move by the Mouse House. Would you be interested in a service like this?
