Cheapskate Dad Won’t Buy a Carseat
Ever notice the people who write to Dear Abby hail from the wussiest section of the society? We’ve just found a contender for nancy ninny of the week with this one.
A mom writes in to old Mrs. VanBuren to say she got into a car accident with her kid. The insurance company says buy a new carseat, and we’ll reimburse you. Dad says no, it’s a waste of money.
Dad might actually be right – the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says not all carseats need to be replaced after a crash. But the NHTSA clarifies that their reasoning for narrowing the definition of crashes that require a seat change is to cut down on the number of kids who will then ride carseat-less because of the financial constraints put on parents and the time it will take to buy a new seat. So they’re not exactly putting a smiley face sticker on the seats post-crash. Read between the lines, and you see “it’s better than nothing.”
Call me the “gullible consumer” here, but when the manual of every major child manufacturer of carseats says the thing needs to be replaced post-accident, I’m willing to pay to make sure that thing works the next time around.
But that’s actually all beside the point. This mom feels her child’s safety is at risk. And she’d rather “continue feeling guilty about placing our child in a possibly compromised car seat” than upset her husband? The funny thing about becoming a parent is that it’s not about you – or him – anymore. It’s about them.
Grow a pair honey, and get your kid a new carseat.

Comstock commented on Sep 17 09 at 2:18 pmWhen you wrote “nancy,” did you perhaps mean “fairy” or “faggot”?
jeannesager commented on Sep 17 09 at 2:21 pmNo, Comstock, I did not. I meant yellow belly, pantywaist, lily liver, etc. And referring to a married female as a nancy is NOT an attack on gays in any book.
PlumbLucky commented on Sep 17 09 at 2:24 pmCall me crazy, but when the insurance co. says they’ll reimburse…seems like a “duh” moment to me.
I’m not sure about “nancy” (my Aunt Nancy is by no means a yellow belly, pantywaist, lily liver, etc) but I will say that Dear Abby sure seems to attract a LOT of stupidity.
Brett Singer commented on Sep 17 09 at 2:36 pmYeah, how is it a waste of money when you get reimbursed? She should replace the seat anyway, but it sounds like this woman is living in fear of her hubby, which is sad.
Comstock commented on Sep 17 09 at 2:44 pmI maintain that nancy is short for nancy boy, a slur against effeminate men and homosexuals, although you have confusingly used it against a woman. And while I’m working for the language police, I’ll complain that your attacks against this woman too-frequently use put-downs that equate weakness with being a woman (wussy is a short step from pussy, nancy, grow a pair).
jeannesager commented on Sep 17 09 at 2:44 pmComstock, I’ve taken stock (no pun intended) and asked some friends – nancy, where I come from, was never used as a homophobic slur. Growing up, it was used just as often toward women and not meant to apply to an effeminate man. I apologize if anyone who has come across this post took it that way.
Kelly commented on Sep 17 09 at 2:51 pmUrban Dictionary defines “Nancy” as – a mocking term for a man engaging in feminine activities or other compromising his masculinity – I didn’t catch that one but I was offended for Mrs. VanBuren and her being called old.
I agree she should grow a pair and get a new car seat.
bettywu commented on Sep 17 09 at 2:52 pmtotally off topic, but where I grew up (outside Chicago) “nancy” was indeed short for “Nancy-boy” and was a gay slur.
jeannesager commented on Sep 17 09 at 2:54 pmThanks guys – again, that wasn’t it’s use when I was growing up. I will say my mother’s name was Nancy, so for my brother and I, it was something we said as a joke but we related it toward our mother. Y’all’s feedback pushed me to change it to ninny. Apologies all around, I am def. not a fan of gay bashing!
Kelly commented on Sep 17 09 at 3:20 pmI want to say I honestly didn’t think you were…I just think you have to be so very careful now. Listen, I am STILL offened by that post that called the large baby a gorilla and was never corrected or apologized for that I saw. There’s a reason I come to this sight (Hi! Brett!) and seeing something that was intentionally hateful like the Gorilla comment is never a good thing. so maybe we are extra sensitive.
lp commented on Sep 17 09 at 4:35 pmThe unending stream of idiotic and spineless people that write in to Dear Abby is amazing. I can’t think of any of her letters where I have actually thought…”gee, that’s a tough one, not sure what I’d do”.
Seriously this was a no brainer, why would you even ASK your husband if it is okay to replace the car seat for FREE??? And if hubby said no…clarify that you weren’t asking hims permission, just informing him of your decision.
Mistress_Scorpio commented on Sep 17 09 at 7:41 pmI pity the fool that stands between my child and his safety. Homegirl should go ahead and turn in that carseat to Babies R Us and get her 20% discount on a new car seat.
Laure68 commented on Sep 17 09 at 9:34 pmSometimes I wonder if these letters are fakes.
Manjari commented on Sep 18 09 at 10:17 amKelly, I agree. I kept checking back to see if there would be a correction or an apology (or SOMETHING) and I was disappointed. You don’t call someone’s baby a gorilla.
Manjari commented on Sep 18 09 at 10:19 amOh, there is one now.
Tom commented on Oct 02 09 at 11:18 pm“When the manual of every major child manufacturer of carseats says the thing needs to be replaced post-accident,” I presume they want to make more money off of us. Steven Levitt has shown that car seats are no more safe than seat belts for children over 2. So, I don’t know how old that child was (you didn’t say), but if it’s over 2 my sympathies are with the father, who could use that $300 to spend on his child in actually productive ways.
PlumbLucky commented on Oct 20 09 at 11:22 amTom – the insurance co. said that they’d reimburse, meaning he wouldn’t be out that $300 for very long at all.
