Pretty Danish Single Mom Was a Fake
Sad news for lonelyhearts men everywhere: Karen, the pretty 27-year-old single mom from Denmark, was a fake.
More weirdly, it was created by Grey Advertising (where Duck Phillips tried to woo Pete and Peggy, for Mad Men fans) as a viral marketing campaign. Their client? Danish tourism.
Um. That’s just plain weird. The message here seems to be “Come to Denmark, where pretty young blonds will take you home, sleep with you, and not bug you about any little souvenirs of that union until well after the newborn, up-all-night, milk-soaked difficult early days!”
That might work on many of the hetero guys I know. Okay, pretty much all of the hetero guys I know (the single ones, anyway). But if I was a Danish woman I’d be pretty pissed. While there are worse stereotypes to fight than “pretty, fertile and easy” I’d hardly want to be known one of a country full of women who just take whatever random traveler home. Part of the premise of the ad was that she didn’t remember the guy’s name or even home country.
Visit Denmark CEO Dorte Kiilerich says,
“We’re telling a nice and sweet story about a modern responsible woman, that lives in a free society and takes responsibility for her choices. And she uses a modern and social media.”
He also said that it’s “good exposure for Danish self-sufficient and dignified women.”
Yeah. There’s been some outcry over the ad, and it’s been removed from YouTube. But as Kiilerich said, it cost them about as much as an ad aired a few times on a secondary TV channel and millions of people have seen or heard if it.
I just find the whole thing sleazy and disrespectful. You?
