13 Year Old Blogger Takes New York Fashion Week By Storm

I love mini fashionistas. They possess the youthful exuberance to wear anything and everything without fear of it being ‘work worthy’ or if it’s ‘sending the right message’. There is a freedom that they possess, these original dressers, that is inspiring. And one 8th grade fashion plate and style blogger has caught the attention of top notch designers. This young girl, from a Chicago suburb, has become a muse for the designers of high end apparel house Rodarte and is doing New York’s Fashion Week…front row and center.

The sisters behind the brand have invited Tavi Gevinson and her dad to sit front row at their show.  Kate Mulleavy- one of the designers – stated that, “Tavi makes you think about things differently, makes you see things differently.” And Tavis did what any fashion loving teen would do, she skipped school for the week to go see their show as well as a handful of others.

Tavi describes herself on her blog as a “Tiny 13 year old dork that sits inside all day wearing awkward jackets and pretty hats. Scatters black petals on Rei Kawakubo’s doorsteps and serenades her in rap. Rather cynical and cute as a drained rat. In a sewer. Farting. And spitting out guts.”

She is the daughter of an artist mom and schoolteacher dad. She launched her blog Style Rookie (Tavi–thenewgirlintown) in March 2008.  Her blog is filled with self portraits of her getups that she took using a tripod and a self timer. The Mulleavy’s found her blog and struck up a friendship with Tavi, sending her a pair of hand knit gloves and talking and texting frequently.  From the looks of her blog she also was able to get into the Rag and Bone, Alexander Wang and Katie Grand party and was seated front row at Marc Jacobs! With profiles on Women’s Wear Daily, the Wall Street Journal and Vogue UKs Blog, I think she’s graduated from Style Rookie and has joined the ranks of a style maven.
