Is Elton John Too Old to Adopt?
Blogs over the weekend were all a twitter with the news that Sir Elton John intended to adopt a 14-month-old boy from the Ukraine. John and his partner David Furnish met the HIV positive boy during an AIDS Foundation trip at an orphanage, the boy had lost both his parents to the disease.
Although John had previously stated that parenthood was not in his plans, after meeting the boy he said “Having seen Lev today, I would love to adopt him. I don’t know how we do that but he has stolen my heart. And he has stolen David’s heart and it would be wonderful if we can have a home. I’ve changed my mind today.”
Now he’ll have to change the mind of the Ukrainian government. A family minister there said that their adoption laws prohibit that an adoptive parent can not be over 45 years old (John is 62). Their laws also prohibit unmarried people to adopt and same sex marriages and partnership are not recognized. The family minister stated that “Foreign citizens who are single have no right to adopt children … and the age difference between the adopter and the child cannot be more than 45 years,” Pavlenko said. “The law is the same for everybody: for a president, for a minister, for Elton John.”
Do you think 62 is too old to adopt?

jenny tries too hard commented on Sep 14 09 at 2:42 pmObviously, the Ukraine does think 62 is far too old to adopt. For me though, it would help to know how old his partner is. If his partner, is say, 50 or younger, I wouldn’t think it too bad. Perhaps Elton John can set up a fund to help British families adopt from this orphanage.
pqbon commented on Sep 14 09 at 2:43 pmI think a boy who is otherwise like to live out his days in a orphanarium is better served by being adopted by Elton John and his partner then by being left to survive in the system.
Its not like people are fighting over the adoption rights for HIV+ kids.
Knitty commented on Sep 15 09 at 8:45 pmYes, he’s pretty old to be adopting young toddler, but we’ve talking about an HIV-positive baby here. Sometimes, exceptions need to be made. This child’s life could be made infinitesimally better if the adoption were allowed. For shame, Ukraine government.
Marj commented on Sep 17 09 at 2:23 pmI kinda respect the Ukrainian government for making the rules and making them stick for everyone. They thought hard and made those rules for a reason, and now they show that in the Ukraine nobody is above the law. If Elton John were serious he could look into adoption elsewhere, even his home country.
Liz commented on Feb 04 10 at 6:43 pmOf course he’s too old and more importantly too famous.Children don’t need celebrity lifestyles imposed on them whatever their cicumstances.
