Morning News – Obama Heckled During Speech

Posted by brettsinger on September 10th, 2009 at 9:00 am

In case you haven’t heard, President Barack Obama was heckled by Carolina Republican Representative Joe Wilson.

Wilson yelled out “You lie!” in response to the President’s claim that illegal immigrants would not receive health care under his proposed plan.

Here’s video of the outburst. It has to be seen to be believed.

As you may have guessed, I’m somewhat irritated by Wilson. More disturbing, however, is the response from some members of the general public. “Love it, we may have lost the majority, but we still have balls” said commenter DC over at the Wall Street Journal’s Washington Wire.

Here’s the thing. Disagree with the President all you want. But heckling the President of the United States during a speech? Are you serious? To use a familiar GOP Conservative Hive Mind style argument, can you imagine if a Democrat had done something like this while a Republican President was speaking? Remember “support the President”? We were all supposed to do that because were “a nation at war.” Guess what? We still are. Have a modicum of respect, if not for the man, than for the office.

Anyway, some other things happened.

Derek Jeter tied Lou Gehrig’s record for most hits by a Yankee. That was fun. He was all “yeah, whatever, let’s get back to the game.” Then the Yankees came from behind and won. That’s RIGHT.

This new movie “9” looks really cool. No, it’s not about Rep. Joe Wilson’s emotional age.

The NFL season starts tonight.

There’s a new iPod Nano and it does video. Not just playback, but video RECORDING. Kinda neat, I have to admit.

I couldn’t stand Bush, but I would have been dismayed if anyone had heckled him. Whether or not you agree with the president’s policies, the office deserves respect.

Honestly, your dismay is about 4 years late. Bush was heckled by more than one Democrat at the 2005 State of The Union Address, while he was speaking on his plan for Social Security reform. Doesn’t make it right; of course it is improper to heckle the holder of our nation’s highest office. It is dishonest, though, for the author–and Daily Kos, too,–to act as if this is something only a Republican would do. Also, Wilson maintains that the President was dishonest in claiming his plan would not cover any illegal immigrants because there is no plan to verify citizenship, and he has apologized for “letting his emotions get the better of him.”

Whoops. Just heard Rahm Emanuelle claiming “no President has ever been treated this way. Ever.” Unfortunately, he is proving Wilson’s poorly-made point.

jenny tries too hard commented on Sep 10 09 at 10:10 am

For the record, this is incorrect. No member of Congress or the House has ever called the President of the United States a liar during a televised speech. If you are referring to booing, I disagreed with that as well, but I don’t think it is nearly as bad. I’m also fairly certain that Wilson violated a 2001 rule that was enacted by Republicans. If you have any actual proof of someone doing what Wilson did, please provide it but to the best of my knowledge it does not exist.

The Dems in 2005 did not call Bush a liar; I never said they did. They did however, heckle and boo loudly, and there was more than one offender. The words were different, but the offense (interupting the President in a disrespectful way) is the same. Find any video of the 2005 State of The Union Address.

jenny tries too hard commented on Sep 10 09 at 1:22 pm

Hey, if illegal immigrants want to buy into the plan and help lower my insurance costs, I say let ‘em…

Dad commented on Sep 10 09 at 1:41 pm

I disagree that booing is the same as directly calling the President a liar, but I also disagree with the “they did it too” argument. OK, so that was also wrong. What’s the point? What Joe Wilson did was wrong. If he is so “emotional” that he can’t control himself, that’s not something to be proud of. People who can’t stop themselves from shouting while at work are not generally lauded for their behavior.

Brett Singer commented on Sep 10 09 at 1:56 pm

No elected official is lauding Wilson, and neither am I. I got very annoyed because you used a what if the shoe was on the foot argument in the post and neglected to mention that a veeerrryyy similar shoe has been on the other foot before. Also it seemed sloppy that you didn’t mention his apology, either.

jenny tries too hard commented on Sep 10 09 at 2:19 pm

As far as whether he should lose his job because of his inability to control himself, the voters in SC will decide that next year, so we’ll see.

jenny tries too hard commented on Sep 10 09 at 2:20 pm

Hadn’t seen his apology when I wrote this post, and I didn’t know about the Bush speech, although I admit I’m not surprised. Had I been writing at that time, I would have said then that I disagree with that as well. I don’t even like the applauding. I think the President should be able to address the nation, Congress, whatever, and not have it turn into the WWE. But that’s America now. Bill Clinton was called terrible things by members of Congress, and I would not be surprised if there was booing during his speeches. Booing is bad. Yelling “LIAR!” is worse.
I have no opinion on whether or not Wilson should lose his job. I meant that the behavior should not be praised, and there are numerous people praising his actions in online forums, which is what I mentioned and personally find appalling. Also, if his apology is “I let my emotions get the better of me,” that’s a pretty weak apology.
I appreciate your comments, but I strongly disagree with the notion that because something vaguely similar happened to a Republican President, that makes a difference. At worst, I chose to use a method of argument that I have often seen used by Glenn Beck, et al. Turns it it’s a bad argument no matter whose side you’re on.

Brett Singer commented on Sep 10 09 at 2:30 pm

That Wilson “maintains that the President was dishonest” doesn’t excuse his embarrassing and inappropriate behavior; moreover, Wilson is wrong.

I’m still waiting for Wilson’s apology for his own fearmongering and dishonesty, though I’m not holding my breath.

Minvo commented on Sep 10 09 at 4:16 pm

Yelling during someone else’s speech is not Balls, it’s a total lack of manners and class. Yeah, no matter whose speech. Rebuttal takes place AFTER the end of the other side’s speech.
