School Skipped Obama Speech, Sends Kids to Bush Speech

george w 300x183 School Skipped Obama Speech, Sends Kids to Bush SpeechSome five hundred kids from Arlington will be bused out to watch former President George W. Bush give a speech later this month at the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium. These are the same kids who weren’t allowed to watch President Barack Obama’s speech to American school children yesterday.

Hypocrisy has a new name, and it shares it with a school district in Texas.

District officials say it’s all different of course. They’ve secured permission slips from the parents for these kids to hop on a bus. Did you hear “nanny, nanny, boo, boo” in the background too?

But the district Superintendent also told the Fort-Worth Telegram that “officials didn’t want to interfere with instruction already planned for Tuesday.”

So which is it Arlington? That you needed the parents to weigh in or that you believe instructional time is more important than speeches? Because compare a twenty-minute televised speech to boarding five hundred kids on buses, sending the buses out, unloading them at a stadium and allowing kids to find their seats, sitting through a speech and then the whole bus process in reverse, and which address actually cost more instructional time?

Although parents are being given the opportunity to sign off on permission slips, I’m not finding anything on the internet about what exactly the former president will have to say. Will it be . . . gasp . . . political? His wife, the former first lady, was one of the many who came out and called the protests against the Obama speech ridiculous, but there’s been no word from the Bush camp on this particular move.

I’m not actually against kids being bused out to see Bush speak. He’s a former president - whether I agree with him or not, it could ostensibly be an “educational” field trip. But the same argument has to hold for watching the current president speak.

Let’s just say Arlington officials won’t be playing in that Cowboys stadium anytime soon with the way they fumble.

Our local school district decided not to show the speech. At first the reason they gave was too many angry parents calling, then later it was that they didn’t have the technology to show the speech (one of the wealthiest districts in PA). Apparently all the right wing loonies around here had nothing to do with it.

It is kind of like they are sticking their fingers in their ears and saying “la-la-la-la if I don’t hear Barack Obama he’s not really president la-la-la-la” I can’t imagine this is a good strategy.

Don’t these parents realize that by shielding their children from Obama’s subliminal-message-impregnated brainwashing speech, they’ve pretty much guaranteed that their little boys & girls will become rabid Commies during their rebellious teen years?

I definitely wouldn’t be signing that permission slip to see Bush. Our school district decided not to show the speech to students because it didn’t fit with the curriculum, but homework was assigned to watch it with a parent or not. I watched it with my 1st grader. It was mostly above his head — I think it was more appropriate for the middle school through high school level. But I thought it was an excellent speech for young people and my son did say that the president’s kids are really lucky to have him for a dad.

Well, you know, I wouldn’t want my children hearing “stay in school and work hard,” either. Total pinko commie propaganda! Rush told me so!

Our district didn’t show it nor did they mention it other than a link on their web page, which by the way doesn’t work when you try it. Our district is wealthy and republican and funny enough not of the brightest.

Well, as an extremely wealthy parent myself, I just want to say that I didn’t spend good money to buy my kids a diploma from a big-name school to have them listen to Obama and think they’ll have to WORK HARD to get wealthy!

To be a fifth grader and have the chance to see a former president speak in person (at the Cowboys stadium, no less) is a pretty big deal. Regardless of their parents political leanings, President Bush has a place in our history and these kids should be thrilled to have this opportunity. Let the kids have their field trip without the drama.
