Dad Trying to Lactate So He Can Breastfeed Child

21842 Dad Trying to Lactate So He Can Breastfeed ChildRagnar Bengtsson, 26, busts out a breast pump every three hours, priming is “breasts” in order to one day hopefully lactate for his future offspring.

As a student, Bengtsson’s lactation vigilance often means he’s must whip out the old breast pump in class.

“…it doesn’t really bother me if it makes people uncomfortable,” he said, “If they have issues with it that’s their problem.”

One doctor thinks he may actually pull it off. A Swedish endocrinologist said that Bengtsson may be able to produce enough prolactin to cause lactation, if he sticks with the plan.

Said doctor even suggests men might want to give kids their nipple, even if there isn’t milk. “Men often have trouble finding things,” Sigbritt Werner, professor of endocrinology at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, told The Local. “And if the mother is out, the child is screaming and they can’t find the pacifier I’m sure there are a lot of men who give their baby their breasts.”

No, doctor, no they wouldn’t.

When asked why he seeks to lactate, Ragnar said, “Anything that doesn’t do any harm is worth trying out.”

I never considered myself a traditional father, but when it comes to bonding with my kid, I think I’ll skip the breastfeeding and maybe just throw the old football around instead. Hey, more power to him, but should he succeed, how much milk could the guy produce? I mean, this guy’s got appetizers to offer at best.

And because you didn’t ask for it, here’s a close up of Ragnar at work:

I cant understand why more men dont breastfeed. That is why they have nipples. Looks like they would want what is best for baby.

I have seen it all. Umm…don’t you have to have mammary glands to be able to lactate? Someone, please correct me if I am wrong?

Screw equal rights. This is just plain old gross. If men were supposed to produce milk for their babies they would be wired with the correct plumbing.

Hmmm….wonder what Bill Maher would say about this guy breastfeeding in public.

You’re right Ali! Why DO men have nipples if not to be used for something…that is a good point, indeed. Not to mention how both partners should know the earth-shattering pain that is a raw nipple from several failed beginners breast-feeding attempts!

LolaLane commented on Sep 08 09 at 2:55 pm

Actually, I can answer the nipple question. Men have nipples because all fetuses begin female and it isn’t until the male sex hormones kick in that the inherently female fetus becomes male. Thus the nipples.

men have nipples for the same reason women have clits—pleasrure

still, I say, more power to him, if he wants to try…I didn’t think it could be done, either, when someone mentioned male breastfeeding before, but it seems that it can, albeit it is rare

I’m getting an initial attention-whorish vibe about the whole thing. When this man’s nipples are cracked and bleeding, then I’ll buy into his commitment.

Whose baby is that? The article said he doesn’t have any yet. I’m pretty open minded, but I really don’t see myself letting random men experiment with breastfeeding my baby.

Could be one of those things where the photographer goaded him into “playing along” and pretending for the shot because this guy says he hasn’t actually tried it on a kid. Or did he say he just hasn’t tried it on “his” kid. Also, he looks like Russel Brand to me.

Hmmm–would one constantly be pulling chest hairs out of the babe’s mouth if the dad was particularly hairy?

snarky mama commented on Sep 09 09 at 1:06 pm

Men actually do have mammary glands, they just don’t develop because of the differences in hormone exposure. This is not a new thing– look at

I’ve read about this. And I can guarantee that 99 out of 100 men will say no way! (If not more.)
