Dog Saves Toddler Lost in Wilderness
Just as the U.S. is filled with news of a dog mauling a toddler, Canada (surprise, surprise) comes out with the feel-good dog and baby story of the year. Truly, this is a tale that puts Lassie to shame.
A family was setting up camp in the Yukon wilderness when a dog appeared out of the woods with porcupine quills in his nose. Taking pity on the mutt, the parents (who have asked to remain anonymous) removed some of the quills from his snout.Apparently, this is one puppy who doesn’t forget a kind deed.
Not long afterward, the parents were busy setting up their trailer when their two-year-old, Kale, wandered into the woods and vanished. Search and rescue teams were unsuccessful in locating the boy. Kale was lost overnight, in temperatures so low they could have killed an adult.
One of the Yukon neighbors involved in the rescue effort was Kim Dolan, whose dog had been missing for about a week. When the toddlers’ distraught parents described the dog who had appeared at their camp shortly before Kale went missing, Dolan immediately knew that was her Koda. “That’s my dog out there. He won’t leave your son,” she told Kale’s parents.
Her words couldn’t have been more on target. 25 hours after Kale disappeared, infrared helicopters picked up a heat image on the ground, which appeared to be a dog. Sure enough, rescuers honed in on Koda and found Kale nearby.
Dolan, who rescued Kale from the streets only a few months earlier, decided to give Koda to the toddler’s family. Although it was hard for her to part with her beloved mutt, she didn’t feel Koda and Kale should be separated after the two shared what was surely a very close night.
