NYC to Offer Kids Swine Flu Vaccines for Free Free Free
Did you know that New York City has more than 1-million schoolchildren in their system? Yeah, I didn’t know that either. And in response to having such a large community, the nation’s biggest school district announced it will offer swine flu vaccinations to each child for free this fall.
When the vaccine is available around mid to late October, the New York City schools as well as hundreds of smaller school districts will be administering the vaccine to most of their students. But don’t start worrying about needles flying here there and everywhere. The vaccine will probably mostly be given via a “mist” in the nose.
A recent White House report is saying that half of the population of the country could become infected with the H1N1 virus with children being at a greater risk for complications. There is no certainty that the flu will hit as hard as projected but it’s best to be more safe than sorry. President Barack Obama stated today that the government will be strongly recommending people getting the vaccine. He said “I don’t want anybody to be alarmed, but I do want everyone to be prepared.”
But there are many out there who fear what side affects could accompany the vaccine since there won’t be the time trials and lengthy research to make sure it is 100% safe, especially for children.
Will you be vaccinating your kids?

There is a lot of misinformation about there about these shots being untested or being fast tracked. There may be some confusion because the European Union decided to fast track the swine flu vaccine, but the US is taking the more conservative approach.

Georgia commented on Sep 02 09 at 1:08 pmThere is no nasal spray vaccine for the swine flu, just the normal injection (and it actually requires 2 shots).
Delphine commented on Sep 02 09 at 2:51 pmUntil they can demonstrate that the swine flu has morphed into something much more virulent than the regular flu, I will not subject my child to a barely tested vaccine. To date (in the US) the swine flu has caused less of a problem than the regular flu even with flu shots. A lot of schools in our area were shut down last year for swine flu, yet the cases were generally mild. Why expose your child to a vaccine with a high potential for adverse effects if the flu itself is not so bad?
Laure68 commented on Sep 02 09 at 3:45 pmDelphine – why are you calling this a “barely tested vaccine”?
Manjari commented on Sep 02 09 at 4:35 pmMy kids will be getting it when it’s available.
Don commented on Sep 03 09 at 7:37 amDelphine- vaccinations have been around for a hundred years and they all do the same thing. They are a small dose of said disease, that triggers a immune response in the body. Your body will then create antigens that will protect against the actual virus.
Groups given the highest priority by the CDC and HHS as outlined by Kathleen Sebelius for H1N1 vaccination are:
* Pregnant women
* Health care and emergency workers
* Caregivers and close contacts of children under 6 months of age
* Anyone between the ages of 6 months and 24 years old
* Adults with a subset of chronic medical conditionsThese groups differ from the seasonal influenza recommendations due to the behavior of H1N1 since its emergence. Thus far, more than 70% of US H1N1 cases have been in people under the age of 24, and children less than 4 years of age have had the highest rate of hospitalization. The recommendations are designed to protect those at the highest risk of complications and death, and given that the groups targeted encompass more than half the US population (approx. 159 million people), children are hardly being singled out for experimentation as he implies.
If you think that “big pharma” has something to gain from immunizing everyone all the time, your wrong. It would be much more cost beneficial to not immunize anyone and then have you pay for hospital visits, pain relief, antivirals(which are very expensive and have much more complications compared to a vaccine).
The biggest fear about the H1N1 virus is that it has followed the same development and path that the virus of the 1920′s pandemic which killed millions. Scientist want to stop the spread of the virus before it mutates into something far worse.
Everyone in my family will be getting the shot. Since any kind of adverse effects are actually quite rare.
mamazee commented on Sep 03 09 at 7:42 pmif it’s made with aborted fetal tissue, i will not have my children vaccinated with it. And most of the new vaccines seem to be (gardasil, chicken pox)… seems like cannibalism to me. or at the very least, coerced donation…
