California Wins Little League World Series
Say it with me now — U! S! A! U! S! A!
Representing the United States, a team of Little Leaguers from Chula Vista, California beat the Taoyuan team from Taiwan by a score of 6-3.
The heroes even had good baseball names: Bulla Graft, who drove in the go-ahead run in the fourth inning, and pitcher Kiko Garcia, who kept the Taiwanese team from scoring after that. (Bulla Graft, meet Butch Huskey. Butch Huskey, Bulla Graft.)
It’s not as good as when Michael Phelps and his co-swimmers beat the annoying French team at the 2008 Summer Olympics. But if I have to root for a Little League team, it’s going to be the one from my home country. And they did come back from a 3-0 deficit.
For Californians, this is a rare sporting victory, according to the team manager Oscar Castro.
“It seems San Diego comes so close all the time. The Padres come close and don’t win. The Chargers come close and don’t win. It was nice to do it for the city.”
I’m sure Joe Torre and the Los Angeles Dodgers will be more than happy to lose this year so that they don’t take anything away from the Little Leaguers. It’s only fair.
