UPDATE: Where Has Jaycee Lee Dugard Been for 18 Years?
When we shared the story of the woman kidnapped at eleven who showed up eighteen years later, we knew nothing about the intervening years.
We sort of wish it had stayed that way. Jaycee Lee Dugard, the little girl who resurfaced as a full grown woman of twenty-nine yesterday in California has apparently been through unspeakable horrors – including becoming a mother to two children via rape.
A variety of news accounts have pieced together a story that says the two people who grabbed eleven-year-old Jaycee right in front of her house as she walked to catch the school bus in 1991 have kept her ever since. The man, Phillip Garrido, was a registered sex offender charged previously with kidnapping and rape. Even scarier – his wife, Nancy, has been arrested along with him for allegedly being in on the whole thing.
Together, the reports are they kept Jaycee under lock and key, and Garrido forced her to have sex with him – creating two children in the process.
He got caught when he took their two kids out to proselytize with him – as a registered sex offender, he wasn’t supposed to be spending time around children. But he’s been doing some pretty scary things online in the meantime, writing a blog dubbed “Voices Revealed” where he calls himself “the man who spoke with his mind” and claims he wants to help law enforcement by telling them when evil demons are controlling people’s minds.
Er, like his own?
It’s hard to assess what’s most disturbing about this story: the kidnapping, the rape, or the fact that it took eighteen years for Dugard to be rescued in part because neighbors ignored the fact that a known sex offender was being seen in the presence of little kids.
Although we do have to step back and realize sex offenders are people too, who have served their time, the purpose of Megan’s Law and others that have paved the way for sex offender registries and neighbor notification is in essence to deputize the community. It’s based on the high recidivism rate of sex offenders, the limited resources of police. In other words: what the heck were these people doing in not speaking up?

If they were so (expletive deleted, fill in your fave) concerned about their rights, they would not have violated a child. The child never got a say in their rights being violated, why should a child molester/rapist? The offender may have served his/her time, but that child is NEVER done “serving” theirs.
I fully believe anyone who harms a child sexually should be branded on the forehead. Their “rights” can kiss my ass.

kristen h commented on Aug 28 09 at 1:25 pmI agree one hundred percent with plumblucky. As a survivor of childhood sexual assault, I try to block it out of my daily life and I am successful most of the time, but it will never leave me, and mine was only a single event. I can’t even comprehend how this woman will be able to move on from this. The monsters who do these things need to be removed from society permanently because they will do it again- there is no true “rehabilitation” for them. Hearing that the SOB that had Jaycee was already a convicted sex offender doesn’t surprise me in the least. I hope he and his equally monstrous wife get what they have coming to them. All I have to say is if they did that to my child, I would make sure they would never have the opportunity to see daylight again.
Bluster commented on Aug 28 09 at 3:21 pmQuestions that need to be answered; Were her children born in that chicken coop? Did they ever need medical care? Did Jaycee? What were the neighbors reaction when the babies woke up the hood with their sickness calls. It’s hard to believe that no one heard the sounds that babies and infants and toddlers make as they grow up. It’s hard to believe that in nineteen years, no one knew that little children were continuously present in ‘that predators’ back yard. For nineteen years????? There’s more to come, I’m sure.
PlumbLucky commented on Aug 28 09 at 3:29 pmkristen h – that’s the reason I have the soapbox, unfortunately.
And just for clarification: I did say “anyone who harms a child sexually” and not “all registered sex offenders”. I realize that some of the sex offender registries are slightly less than accurate and that there are some red herrings on them that really should not be. However – if you have been convicted of harming a child sexually? No question. Branding. No painkillers or anesthesia.
patricia commented on Aug 28 09 at 3:45 pmEven worse, the kids are 11 and 15, which means Jaycee had them when she was 14 and 18. I kind of feel like death is too good for him….
carefree childhood commented on Aug 28 09 at 7:02 pmdon’t blame the neighbors. According to the article I just read the neighbors called the police but the police never searched his yard because even though he was a registered sex offender the local police didn’t realize he was a registered sex offender. Which sounds really really weird
Mistress_Scorpio commented on Aug 28 09 at 10:42 pmInterestingly enough, it was thanks to a female cop finally looking into this guy (after being tipped off by another woman) that finally caught him. http://abcnews.go.com/Nightline/story?id=8437707
Knitty commented on Aug 29 09 at 9:50 amI read an article yesterday that reports neighbors DID call the cops on numerous occasions and were told things like “well, that’s not illegal” (having a woman and child living in the yard) and “we don’t have a warrant, so oh well.” And I also agree with you, PlumbLucky. I’m all for a one-strike law when it comes to sex crimes against children. These people don’t change, they just serve out their measly sentences and go out and do it again.
jeannesager commented on Aug 29 09 at 10:14 amApologies for picking on the neighbors – at the time this was written (Friday morning), reports pointed to the neighbors ignoring the situation rather than the other way around.
New news has come out that points to calls having been made on Jaycee’s behalf: http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=8431843
Also – PlumbLucky, I am in agreement with you, someone who hurts a child should be strung up (and I’m not even pro-death penalty!!). I will say people need to be careful when they read the registry to realize that cases of statutory rape can sometimes (sometimes, not always) be misleading. Big age gaps are awful, but when an 18-year-old had sex with his 17-year-old girlfriend and mom got mad and called the cops . . . he’ll end up on a registry.
Sue commented on Aug 30 09 at 9:35 amThis is a very scary truth. I have a daughter and I am a helicopter mom and the reality of this makes me even more ceratain that I am right to be one. I dont mean hoard her every waking moment or shelter her to the point of stunting her growth but I do mean taking her to the bus stop and making sure she is safe. I thought at 11 I would let my girl stand at the bus stop it seems innocent enough but it seems to me that even that could end up being fatal! I want to ask how many more Dugards are out there still….in make shift sheds and boarded up barns in people’s isolated homes used and abused as sex slaves…someone’s daughter someone’s sister…someone’s life! It is crippling to think that this could happen all these years and noone came to find her. Where was her hero her angel, HER GOD! How can anyone justify this as fate and write it up as God’s will??? I am appalled that this digusting man took her at the age of 11 and his wife a WOMAN allowed this to happen to this child all these years what kind of human being ALLOWS that to happen. She is more to blame than him I feel. he was sick he already had history he had no control but what about her? I think she deserves to be tarred feathered and hung! The old fashioned way and so does he! We dont need scum like this on this earth hunting our children…the most innocnt and most worthy of protection. http://www.truuconfessions.com moms and women alike have expressed outrage and their diverse opinions on this subject their fears and predictions are the pulse of American conscience
KJ commented on Aug 31 09 at 1:01 amThe entire situation blows my mind. I have a 7yr old daughter and I can’t imagine dealing with this type of pain. That man and women who did this should be locked up for good, no doubt. The neighbors are not to blame but it does raise the question, “shouldn’t we all be more proactive if we see red flags and not take no for an answer from the police when something just doesn’t seem right?” I’m just as guilty for not wanting to get involved but after reading about this case I personally will be note aware of my surroundings. Also, we all have our own beliefs but I must comment to say this is not “God’s will.” God gave us freedom to make our own decisions, He doesn’t always like what we do but doesn’t stop it either because then we would not truly be free, the book , “the Shack” based on a horrible situation that brings peace and understanding to the victims does a good job of explaining how God’s role plays into tradegy such as what has occurred to Jaycee and her family. I pray for Jaycee and her family to heal, have peace in her heart, and am thankful she had a second chance at life…
Rosana commented on Aug 31 09 at 11:17 amIt has been widely reported that more than one neighbor notified authorities about children in this house but they were not diligent enough to uncover the horror. Maybe law enforcement should be given more authority to search a house when something seems suspicious to a neighbor. That is the only time when I feel good about having busybodies in my neighborhood.
Ann commented on Sep 16 09 at 10:51 pmComments I wish all the offenders wil have a sign on their body so that the public will be warn that these guys are dangrous. Such as cutting of thumbs, or cutting of ears, its a pity that the child had to suffer so much
mary demster commented on Sep 27 09 at 5:23 amComments I think that it is wondeful, that Jaycee Lee has been found. But this very upsetting to me, that this has happened. The fact, this man, got the chance to do this in the first place. This child lost 18 years of her life. But yet he is the one with all the rights, where were her rights, when she needed them. The law will take your child from your home, if they think it is being abused, but yet, a sex offener can do as they please. Well I ask when are we going back to the old laws if you commit a crime you pay the price. We no longer have rights, because the goverment is seeing that our crimmials get away, with the crimes they commit. But if it were to happen, to they’re family member, you can bet your life, that within 24 hours someone, would be caught and tried with a life or deadth sentence. But its ok for the drug dealers, the rapist, sex offenders, or muders to run lose in our nebiorhoods, if you don’t belive it, let someone in the goverment, who keeps voting in all of the new laws, that proctect the crimmials., let they’re family come into arms way and how fast something is done about it. I promise it won’t take 18 years to solve the crime. Now to Jaycee Lee I say i’ll pray for you and your family and wish you all the best.
P!nk4Evr commented on Nov 23 09 at 4:54 pmand this why parents need to take there kids to school. cause of dumb fucking rapist out there such has this one.
elle commented on Mar 11 11 at 10:19 pmJaycee’s story is unforgettable. What a miracle end to a living nightmare. I try to imagine . . . her first moments in that car when they snatched her. Did they drug her? How did they drive her 174 miles (or whatever) away? She must have been out of her mind terrified. I cannot imagine what she must have thought and how she felt at 11 to be stolen from her parents and her life, to be taken prisoner by an evil wretched snake like Garrido, and at what point did she separate her old life in her mind from the horror that she was forced to live. Because there’s no way she could survive if she kept thinking about her parents and her home. And somehow she survived. To have a baby at 14 by a monster who kidnapped and raped you . . . this poor girl. She has been in hell. It’s because of evil people like Garrido and his freak-wife that we need to keep the death penalty. The fact that those two people are allowed to wait and eat and sleep and have a lawyer is an insult to the lives of anyone anywhere who has suffered abuse. No, the neighbors should have done more. The police . . . unfathomable blundering and stupidity. Jaycee receive $20 million as a settlement from the state. It should have been $100 million. The state got off cheap. God bless Jaycee. I hope she is free of any bad feelings she may have. I hope she and her daughters at least understand the truth, that Garrido and that horrible woman are monsters, and that they owe him nothing.
