Celebs’ Fave Carseat Dangerous?
It’s good enough for the likes of Kelly Rutherford and Cam Gigandet, but a new test from Consumer Reports says the Orbit travel system isn’t actually all that good.
The non-profit has rated the Orbit carseat, carrier and stroller as a “don’t buy” after tests showed the high-priced system failed crash tests.
According to a Consumer Reports press release, the carrier/seat actually detached from its base – despite being properly installed – during two out of six frontal crash tests performed at thirty mph.
It’s one of the higher priced travel systems on the market, but it gets plenty of press because of its popularity with the folks who can afford the price: celebrities. The Orbit Travel System has made frequent appearances on Babble’s Droolicious when celebs are spotted wheeling their kids around in Orbit Baby.
The good news for parents? The Graco Stylus and Eddie Bauer Adventurer, both significantly cheaper than the $900 Orbit, stayed put during the tests. The Stylus, in particular, was rated a “best buy” by Consumer Reports for its performance.
Orbit has not issued a recall, telling Consumer Reports that it has had no reports of injuries to kids. The report did show the Orbit performed fine as a stroller, so parents can feel comfortable continuing use in that manner. Julie commented on Aug 27 09 at 2:43 pmI think this could be the downfall of COnsumer Reports. There is obviously something shady about this. I think someone or some company had it in for Orbit. But, as someone who bought the system knows, this product is head and shoulders above the rest and competitors are scared.
Dub commented on Aug 28 09 at 11:07 amI did some research on this. It looks like Consumer Reports actually screwed up the test by failing to install the seat the way the instructions tell you to. Apparently the people from Orbit flew out to the same lab that CR uses, made sure the seat was installed correctly, and Voila, no problems. What a mess. CR made the same mistake a couple of years ago and had to print a retraction….
