These Kids See Dead People
While on vacation a few weeks ago, my four-year-old woke me up in the middle of the night.
“I can’t sleep. There’s a blue ghost talking to me.”
And the next night:
“The blue ghost is moving on all the walls.”
Is there anything creepier than kids talking about ghosts? Maybe I’ve seen one too many horror movies, but her late night news reports were enough to give me chills that drove any chance of sleep away.
Chances are my daughter was simply waking up in a strange room and feeling uncomfortable. But there are kids out there that seem to have a more regular relationship with things the rest of us can’t see. Take these two boys featured on 20/20.
Anthony and Pablo both say that they can see and talk to spirits. Anthony says that the people he sees are often have injuries, but mostly look like a “plain old person.” Pablo, on the other hand, tends to see things that are far more fierce and terrible — disfigured monsters that scream at him from his closet, for instance.
Both sets of parents were skeptical until the boys “proved” their psychic ability by reporting things about deceased family members that they couldn’t possibly know. Anthony’s parents enrolled him into a camp for kids with psychic abilities, while Pablo is getting care from a counselor who also happens to have an interest in paranormal events.
I’m a natural born skeptic, which makes me wonder — especially in Pablo’s case — if this is more of a mental health issue than one that’s based in the paranormal. Pablo’s parents say that medication didn’t help him, but once his counselor told him he could talk back to the ghosts and tell them to go away, he improved radically. Is it possible that he gained control over his own illness? Or could he really be talking back to ghosts?
What’s your opinion? And if your kid has ever said something that really creeped you out, share it with us in comments!

LolaLane commented on Aug 25 09 at 3:54 pmMy son once woke up screaming about “something over there”. When I asked him to point it out, he pointed to the darkness in the closet. To this day I have no idea if he was just scared of a dream he’d had, or whether something was truly there, but regardless, I believed him. I believe in the occult and the supernatural. I guess I’ve just never been so presumptuous to think that us living is all there is…

Lorraine commented on Aug 26 09 at 9:42 amI think people tend to be fascinated with the supernatural and can be very quick to (falsely) attribute something they don’t have an answer for to the occult. Lola, do you really believe that there was a ghost in your child’s room instead of the more likely scenario that he just had a bad dream??

Crystal commented on Mar 10 10 at 11:05 amI am Pablo’s Mom and unfortunately the show ABC aired was extremely edited and didn’t tell the entire store. They were more interested in the entertainment factor (making Pablo appear to be constantly living in fear and horrified with his abilities) than presenting the entire story. Pablo was checked out physically by several specialists including a neurologist before he was taken to see psychiatrists at the suggestion of the neurologist. He saw several psychiatrists, counselors and was diagnosed with several mental disorders (not at the same time of course) and medicated with several types of medication over a period of several years! The medicines didn’t ever help! They made him sick and permanently so! Not only was he vomiting and lethargic but he now suffers from the need to constantly move and stretch different parts of his body. We were told this is a side effect of the medication and will never go away! During the interview Pablo was speaking of past experiences from years ago not current ones. Of course ABC didn’t air the part where Chris hid a baseball in our freezer while Pablo waited outside only to have Pablo come in the house and tell him where it was! They also didn’t air the part about how Pablo learned about energies and how to use that to help people or how he is able to help spirits cross over when they can’t find their way! They should have aired the entire story since we spent 2 days filming with them, sent them pictures and video they insisted Pablo take while conducting his own investigation on his grandma’s home (that was the video he shot of the closet it wasn’t even in our house!) We are so unhappy with the outcome of the filming which we only agreed to do after we were assured that the show would be in tune with our message of finding help for kids with intuitive abilitis which was our whole reason for the doing the show in the first place.
