Sixth Grade Ace Scores Obama Interview
Some journalists go their whole careers without scoring “big-name” interviews.
And then there’s Damon Weaver. The Florida sixth grader has interviewed Dwayne Wade, interviewed Vice President Joe Biden, covered the inauguration, and finally, after a long time trying, he scored an interview with President Barack Obama earlier this month.
The interview’s become a YouTube sensation (it’s linked below). Some highlights of Weaver’s interview include his asking the president if he has the power to make school lunches better (the president said that they were encouraging schools to try to make them healthier) and the two discussing basketball.
Weaver proclaimed the president “very tall and nice” (hee) and asked him to be his “homeboy.”
The whole thing was leading up to a speech Obama’s planning for Sept. 8, the first day of school for many children, about helping children succeed in school. And when Weaver asked him what kids can do to make the country better (which I thought was a good question), he said that they should do their best to excel in school and also to be of service and help others.
This interview will be something that Damon Weaver will remember his whole life – and I hope it gives him a sense of pride and purpose. He’s already been offered a full scholarship to Georgia Atlantic University for his efforts.
