a really special book 5889 1248201303 1 Most Offensive Book Title Youll See All DayAh, the olden days. When such things as “sensitivity” and “feeling” were the domain of dirty COMMIES! Here’s a book designed to help you do crafts with your developmentally disabled child. But, uh, that’s not how they put it back then.

A quote from the cover blurb: “This book is written primarily for teachers and for parents whose youngsters have come into the world with less potential than the so-called ‘average’ child.” Thanks, greatest generation!

Comments The title is “Crafts for the Retarded,” for those viewing in Firefox.

This really isn’t that bad. Retarded was a technical term not all that long ago and I suspect, given the obvious age of the book, that was the intent behind usage. Today the book would be titled, “Viseo-kinesthetic activities for the Intellectually Challenged” or as any educator would read it, “Crafts for Retarded”.

Having said that, I throw a stinking sh** fit over the use of retard or retarded as an insult.

“Retarded” means slow, right? Slow is not so bad. We could all use some slow, frankly. Here’s my defense of retarded, regarding my son who has Down syndrome: http://www.imperfectparent.com/shortbus/my-kid-is-retarded/772_1/

honestly, the connotations of this word have changed DRASTICALLY since this book was written. so, it’s really not offensive, just dated.

I don’t get the Firefox comment. THAT’s retarded.

P.S….love the post, Karen. Good stuff.

Are people praising other writers work on my post? Ouch.

Has no one seen the book that Amazon is offering for sale? http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/11/10/entertainment/main7041349.shtml?tag=contentMain;contentBody
“The Pedophile’s Guide to Love and Pleasure: a Child-lover’s Code of Conduct”
Now that is offensive.

Hahahahhahahahha!!!!!!!!! RETARD!!!!!!!!!! Its just a word. Used in a descriptive manner. See I’m even describing you as a retard for having diminished mental capacity or learning ability. If you really have issue with this then you are only proving my point. It is not derogatory. Just used my inflection of tone to overstate your sensitivity and to poke fun at you for it and for acting like a retard. Next thing you know is that you’ll be apologetic for your hair or skin color.
