Most Offensive Book Title You’ll See All Day
Ah, the olden days. When such things as “sensitivity” and “feeling” were the domain of dirty COMMIES! Here’s a book designed to help you do crafts with your developmentally disabled child. But, uh, that’s not how they put it back then.
A quote from the cover blurb: “This book is written primarily for teachers and for parents whose youngsters have come into the world with less potential than the so-called ‘average’ child.” Thanks, greatest generation!

meemee commented on Aug 24 09 at 10:44 amComments The title is “Crafts for the Retarded,” for those viewing in Firefox.
Lisa commented on Aug 24 09 at 2:44 pmThis really isn’t that bad. Retarded was a technical term not all that long ago and I suspect, given the obvious age of the book, that was the intent behind usage. Today the book would be titled, “Viseo-kinesthetic activities for the Intellectually Challenged” or as any educator would read it, “Crafts for Retarded”.
Having said that, I throw a stinking sh** fit over the use of retard or retarded as an insult.
Karen Murphy commented on Aug 24 09 at 3:58 pm“Retarded” means slow, right? Slow is not so bad. We could all use some slow, frankly. Here’s my defense of retarded, regarding my son who has Down syndrome: http://www.imperfectparent.com/shortbus/my-kid-is-retarded/772_1/
cavale commented on Aug 24 09 at 5:11 pmhonestly, the connotations of this word have changed DRASTICALLY since this book was written. so, it’s really not offensive, just dated.
GP commented on Aug 25 09 at 7:25 amI don’t get the Firefox comment. THAT’s retarded.
GP commented on Aug 25 09 at 7:28 amP.S….love the post, Karen. Good stuff.
Cole Gamble commented on Aug 25 09 at 12:24 pmAre people praising other writers work on my post? Ouch.
Sarah commented on Dec 06 10 at 2:04 pmHas no one seen the book that Amazon is offering for sale? http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/11/10/entertainment/main7041349.shtml?tag=contentMain;contentBody
“The Pedophile’s Guide to Love and Pleasure: a Child-lover’s Code of Conduct”
Now that is offensive.
edro commented on Mar 18 11 at 8:04 amHahahahhahahahha!!!!!!!!! RETARD!!!!!!!!!! Its just a word. Used in a descriptive manner. See I’m even describing you as a retard for having diminished mental capacity or learning ability. If you really have issue with this then you are only proving my point. It is not derogatory. Just used my inflection of tone to overstate your sensitivity and to poke fun at you for it and for acting like a retard. Next thing you know is that you’ll be apologetic for your hair or skin color.
