Revenge by Craigslist – Woman Charged in Setting Up Teen
Another day, another disgruntled person using Craigslist as a means of revenge.
This time it’s Elizabeth A. Thrasher, a 40-year-old (read: should know better) Missouri woman who had a “deteriorating relationship” with the woman her ex-boyfriend was dating. (Because that’s unusual.) The woman’s 17-year-old daughter got involved in some virtual back-and-forth and sent Thrasher a MySpace message that commanded she “grow up.”
Thrasher decided not to take that advice. Instead, she put the 17-year-old girl’s picture, email address, cell number, and address of her job on Craigslist under the “Casual Encounters” section with language that the local sheriff’s department says “could have been construed as being sexual in nature.”
Thrasher was charged with felony harassment under the new “Megan Meier” law. Meier was the teen who committed suicide after a friend’s mother harassed her online. But Thrasher’s attorney criticizes both the law and the evidence against Thrasher. “This is just crazy that somebody can get arrested and charged with a felony for some behavior that’s so innocuous,” he told stltoday.com.
The teen received phone calls, emails, and even porn from men who read the listing, so I think he needs to rethink his definition of innocuous. The Megan Meier law might just being doing its job protecting teens. And maybe it’ll teach the women who harass them they left high school decades ago and therefore need to start acting like adults.
That said, is this a crime that deserves a felony charge? What do you think?

Mistress_Scorpio commented on Aug 20 09 at 3:03 pmAbsolutely to the felony charge.
Naomi commented on Aug 20 09 at 3:49 pmAbsolutely. People should be judged harshly when they are so vindictive. Especially when a child might have been harmed.
Diane commented on Aug 20 09 at 11:23 pmAbsolutely. She targeted a minor. And in a cruel way that could have led to sexual predation.
Shannon commented on Aug 21 09 at 9:57 amYes for putting up her contact info. I don’t know the extent of the law, but if it were to call just plain old virtual harassment (as opposed to exposing a person to face-to-face harassment and physical danger) I’d disagree with that. But the adult-minor line crossing also makes it worse, in my opinion.
