Lots of stuff this week, so let’s just dive right in.

Super Friends Vol 2 #18 — This is a cute kiddie book that has no crossover appeal at all. A recent review in Comic Buyer’s Guide complained about this, saying that the book was “too juvenile.” Um, dude? That’s the point. Not everything has to appeal to everyone. The cover says it was “based on the toy line by Mattel”, which usually doesn’t mean a lot of character depth. I think there’s a new cartoon series pending based on this book, but I may be making that up since I can’t find any news about it online.

Tiny Titans #19 — Other than Pet Avengers, this is probably my favorite all ages comic. I don’t read all of my son’s books, but this one I try to catch at some point. Basically, it takes various characters from the DC Comics Universe (DCU for those of us who are, well, nerdy) and turns them into silly cartoon characters. The main “plot” focuses on the Tiny Titans, who are pre-school age versions of the Teen Titans — Robin, Starfire, Wonder Girl, Cyborg, Beast Boy, and so on. They go to Sidekick City Elementary, where Slade is the pricipal. In the “real” comics, Slade, aka Deathstroke the Terminator, is the Titans’ arch enemy. Darkseid, one of the more terrible villians of the DCU, is the school lunch lady. So it’s for kids, but there are a lot of insidery comic book jokes. It’s completely ridiculous and cracks me up every time. You can read an interview with Tiny Titans’ auteur Art Baltazar over at his Five Minute Time Out.

Transformers Animated Allspark Almanac TP — we never really got into the new Animated Transformers series in my house, but for those who did, this is probably a good buy. Here’s some video if you have no idea what I’m talking about.

Marvel Adventures Avengers #39 — Good solid all-ages Marvel comic.

Archie #600 — The main event! Archie Andrew proposes to Veronica Lodge! Wait, what? He picks Veronica, not Betty? WTF? ARGH!!! Also: will the gang break up after everyone goes to college? Oh noes! Here is a preview of the book, via newsok.com.

Simpsons Comics #157 — not something I buy for the kids, but these are very popular comics.

Disney Pixars Monsters Inc Laugh Factory #1 — Boom! Studios has a hit on its hands, several actually, with their comics based on the Disney/Pixar movies. My kids, even my youngest that isn’t reading yet, have loved the comic book versions of ‘Finding Nemo’, ‘The Incredibles’, ‘Toy Story’ and ‘Cars’. Note that these are not adaptations of the films, but original stories featuring the characters.

Grown up book of the week: Army Of Darkness Ash Saves Obama #1 — There may be almost as many comic books featuring President Barack Obama as they are bills floating through Congress. The Onion AV Club calls it Baracksploitation (not sure if they coined the phrase, but that’s where I first read it). The books typically sell very well; for example, Amazing Spider-Man #583 featured the President on the cover and in a story, and there were multiple printings that all sold out. The ‘Army of Darkness’ comics are fun, so I’m giving this one a chance.

Retro book of the week: Essential Marvel Team-Up Vol 3 TP — a collection of the classic Marvel Team-Up comics. I loved this series and Marvel should bring it back. Wahh.

Title of the week: Ninja High School #171 — This is a manga title that I’m not familiar with at all. But, like Werewolf Bar Mitzvah, it’s just a good title. Probably not for kids, though.
