Issues! What You Know About Jenny McCarthy and Autism is Wrong
Everything you think you know about Jenny McCarthy and her stance on childhood vaccines is probably wrong. For example, you probably think she’s totally opposed to childhood vaccinations, right?
Wrong.
She thinks the immunizations cause autism, right?
Wrong.
Oh, and her son is austic, right?
Well, yes, that’s right. But also sort of wrong. We’ll get to that.
In the September issue of Cookie magazine, editor Pilar Guzman interviews the outspoken actress and former Playboy model to set the record straight. Cookie magazine is where last year, you’ll recall, actress Amanda Peet likened McCarthy to a parasite, which Peet later apologized for saying.
No hard feelings from McCarthy, apparently, because this is what she has to say about vaccines and Peet:
“I think vaccines are one of the greatest things ever invented. I used to be [Peet] before I had a kid with autism.”
The greatest thing? So what’s all the protesting and advocacy for?
What McCarthy and boyfriend Jim Carrey are working toward (they serve on the board of Generation Rescue) is eliminating any toxins from vaccines and also allowing for delaying shot schedules. McCarthy’s son Evan, now 7, was diganosed with autism at 2 1/2, after suffering hallucinations, seizures and eventually cardiac arrest.
Looking back at his medical history, she said she sees a link between a hep-B shot, some chronic ear infections, a case of eczema — that these might have been signs of immunity issues, which would have been a good time to then delay more other vaccines.
“Vaccinations are safe—dot, dot, dot—for some kids. Vaccinations are not safe—dot, dot, dot—for other kids. Let’s protect the ones who are weak. We are pro–safe vaccine. Vaccines are just not one size fits all. If you gave everyone in the world penicillin, there would be some adverse effects for some people, and possibly deaths.”
McCarthy also said that she believes Evan has recovered from autism, the result of eliminating wheat and dairy from his diet. She said he’s a social kid with lots of friends and a happy life.

[...] Everything You Know About Jenny McCarthy is Wrong [...]
They Say: Induction Lowers Risk of C-Section. Really? | Strollerderby commented on Aug 18 09 at 12:00 pmGib commented on Aug 18 09 at 12:00 pmShe is lying. She is anti-vaccine. Because for a start, the “toxins” she claims are in the vaccines either aren’t in there at all, or aren’t toxins.
Also, the “delaying” of the schedule she talks about is no such thing. It’s cutting out many vaccines completely.
She’s a nutter who is the cause of dead kids.
See this article for a more realistic interpretation of her feelings:

Leila commented on Aug 18 09 at 12:01 pmYou’re wrong about Jenny McCarthy. She does think vaccines cause autism and so do all those Generation Rescue types. Don’t believe their euphemisms.
Ticktock commented on Aug 18 09 at 12:44 pmLet me be added to the list of parents that see right through this rebranding campaign. Jenny believes that there are toxins in vaccines, but she can’t produce an example of one actual toxin. Jenny’s advice that some kids shouldn’t be vaccinated is counter to her rhetoric for the past four years in which she’s shouted over epidemiologists and browbeaten anyone with evidence.
Of course, it’s nice to see that she’s toning down her rhetoric and positioning herself for a return to Hollywood. There’s been too many parents who have listened to her tirades and believed them. Will they continue to listen to her now that she’s pulled herself back from the brink of craziness?
Marj commented on Aug 18 09 at 1:05 pmAlso if allergies to wheat and dairy = autism, where do the vaccines even come in? Yeah, I’ll get my science from scientists, and leave the entertaining to entertainers.
Scientist commented on Aug 18 09 at 1:46 pmI’ll add my voice to those who think the whole not-antivaccine-just-pro-safe-vaccine stuff is BS. Vaccines are safe. The difficulty in dealing with anti-vax types is that they are constantly moving the goalposts, keeping their vague definitions of “safe” always out of reach of the data. Here’s some news for these people: any medical intervention carries some risk.
ChiLaura commented on Aug 18 09 at 3:06 pmConvenient timing, isn’t it? Her kid has “recovered” from autism (what?), so now she softens, supposedly. In other words, she’s operating based on her immediate feelings regarding the situation. Autism = angry; post-autism = a bit more mellow. Stickin’ with my doctor’s advice on this one.
Laure68 commented on Aug 18 09 at 3:07 pmSorry to be repetitive, but I agree with all the comments saying that Jenny is absolutely anti-vaccine. First of all, she will only accept a vaccine that has absolutely no side effect, which is impossible. (Everything you do in your life – even breathing air – has a potential side effect.) Each time one of her ideas is proven wrong, she changes what she says is “acceptable” for vaccines. She will never be satisfied.
Like Scientist says, vaccines are already safe, in that their benefit greatly outweighs their risk.
NC Mom commented on Aug 18 09 at 3:27 pmIf her son has “recovered” from Autism…isn’t there a chance he was misdiagnosed to begin with?
Lisa commented on Aug 18 09 at 3:30 pmThere are reports of children ‘recovering’ from autism with early intervention; of course, I question if the diagnosis was accurate to begin with.
Any speech delay in boys almost ALWAYS raises the autism specter especially in the early intervention programs.. often unwarrented to my mind. In my classroom, many of my boys who would have been described as ‘nerds’ or ‘geeks’ when I was a kid have been labeled autistic, Asperger’s or on the spectrum (referring to the autistic spectrum). When did geekdom become pathological?
Mistress_Scorpio commented on Aug 18 09 at 3:45 pmCount me in on doubting Jenny’s motives on this one. Isn’t Oprah giving her a show? Sounds like Jenny’s rehabbing her rep to look more reasonable and rational.
Knitty commented on Aug 18 09 at 8:48 pmWhat everyone else said, and also: her son is still autistic. He’s clearly doing a lot better than he was when he was a toddler, but any parent of an autistic child would instantly peg him as a kid on the spectrum.

These are some of the ingredients in the Avian Flu vaccine…….are you sure that thimerosol which is basically a form of mercury good for you. Think people…instead of having an opinion on something you think you know about!

Notice that an actual strain of the chicken pox virus is included in the vaccine…..that means that you get the chicken pox when you get vaccinated! The virus can lie dormant for years before you actually see the effects of it, this is why you can only get chicken pox once!
Dion Jackson commented on Sep 08 09 at 6:17 pmComments1. “What’s in the flu shot?”
“And high-dose mercury is not the only additive in the new flu vaccinations. Besides injecting live flu virus directly into yours and your child’s body, these shots will also contain “adjuvants,” to make the virus supply for the shots go farther. One of the adjuvants will probably be “squalene.” This is a naturally occurring substance found throughout the human body, and might be harmless if you drank it. But when it is injected, several of the doctors in the references below, believe it will cause the body to produce antibodies which will produce autoimmune diseases in many and compromise their quality of life permanently, and they believe many will die. ”

Joy commented on Oct 11 09 at 5:43 pmI know it is easy to focus on the quick sound bites provided by the evening news, but Jenny McCarthy never said she was anti-vaccine. If you listen to her Larry King interview, she is very careful to explain that what she was working toward was a smarter and more individualized vaccination schedule. The reason for this is that some kids (my son for instance) are have allergies and sensitivities to some of the chemicals, especially the preservatives like aluminum, in the shots that can produce catastrophic reactions and cause lasting neurological damage. My boy is 2 and requires speech and occupational therapy after just such a reaction following his first series of shots. Did we stop his vaccines, well yes, at first we did, but now he’s slowly catching up one shot at a time. This is exactly what Ms. McCarthy recommends and I applaud her for going public with her ideas. Had we not considered the vaccinations as a possible cause (his original doctor was adamant that the vaccines were not the cause) & gone ahead with the next series, my son could be dead.
