Loud Kids? Good – You’ll Lose More Weight
Who knew there was an added benefit to a screeching child when you want to work out?
A new study says women who pump up the volume on their tunes during exercise perform better and are happier. In other words? Having to crank it to hear it over the caterwauling might help you lose the baby weight.
The study’s author, Janet McOrdie, a grad student at the University of Western Ontario in Canada, was quoted on MSNBC this week explaining music with a workout is a good psychological distraction. . . usually from the protest in their muscles. Hence the reason we all pick up the iPod when we’re headed to the gym.
The increased volume was linked to increased intensity of the workouts for the women in the study, but the music didn’t have to be excessively loud. Performed within the context of medical research, the volume changes for the women studied were done to ensure the music never reached excessive levels (no, they didn’t go to a toddler’s ear-splitting shriek level).
And what about moms who can’t crank the music because they have to listen to their kids during the stroller walk or the Mommy and Me push ups? How about a sing along? They’ll be happy to sign louder . . .
