Hippy Baby Names

kellybub2 244x366 200x300 Hippy Baby NamesIn honor of the 40th Anniversary of Woodstock, here are some “hippy baby names.”

The most popular names are certainly classifiable as “hippy” or “hippy-ish” or “hippy-esque.” Whatever you want to call them. I’m talking about Rainbow, Sunshine, Rain. Sky, Willow, Flower. Moon Beam. Others are less popular, but obvious if you think about it. Fillmore. Dharma. Paisley. (“OK, we’re going to take a bong hit and close our eyes. The first thing we see when we open our eyes, that’s what we’re naming the baby… *pfff* Paisley… cool…”)

But Emmanuel? Christian? Those I wouldn’t have pegged as “hippy names.”

Note that all of this list is hardly scientific. It’s from a site called Hippy.com. Which I suppose could be the official web site of all things Hippy. But I doubt it.

Peace and love. Peace and love.

I dated a guy in high school whose mom was thankfully talked out of naming him Gaily Love.

My hippy friends named their kid Christian, but I don’t think they were aiming for a hippy name.

Yeah, I was surprised to see the name Christian on this list.

My sister’s name is Lily Pheasant (yep, a flower and a bird). My hippy dad, who turned 18 at Woodstock, was the one who put his foot down when my non-hippy Mom suggested Pheasant as the first name.

My mom wanted to name my brother Christian – but the French version which my father said sounded too much like “Cretin” when pronounced. He put his foot down and we ended up with an Alex.

One of the squarest couples I know named their daughter Summer, which felt more on the hippy-ish side to me.
And I’m with you, Christian and Emmanuel feel decidedly anti-hippy (like, get a haircut, get a job kind of names).

I once met someone named Beau. French for beautiful boy. His response was, “My parents were hippies.”
