Grieving Father Almost Buries Son Alive
Shortly after Jose Alvarenga’s son was born prematurely, doctors couldn’t detect a heartbeat. Arrangements were made for a funeral for the boy, who weighed just a pound at birth. And Alvarenga began to grieve.
Four hours after the birth and death, the tiny baby’s body was delivered to Alvarenga, who lives in Paraguay’s capital city, Ascuncion. The father lifted the coffin’s lid to say a final good-bye.
The boy was breathing.
The U.K.’s Daily Mail reports that Alvarenga rushed the boy back to the hospital, where he was put in an oxygen chamber. Soon thereafter, he was in stable condition.
The head of pediatric intensive care said the doctor who declared the unnamed boy dead performed the examination improperly. Officials are investigating.
Obviously a great and dramatic ending. But I’m feeling for the parents who faced a similar sitaution with a less-than-happy ending. Are they wondering, you know, if they should have taken just one more look?
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of this kind of thing. A couple of years ago in the U.K., a 20-ounce baby girl was saved by a snuggle.
