The New Bad Boy: Notorious BIG’s Son Is Rapping Now
First he played his father as a young boy in this year’s hot biopic, Notorious. Now Christopher Wallace Jr. (CJ) is trying to follow in his musical footsteps.
Word has it Lil B.I.G. (yes, it’s an oxy-moron, but what would you call Biggie Smalls?) is making his own mixtape.
Are you as strangely excited as I am?
He’s only twelve – in fact he was only a few months old when his father was gunned down in a mysterious shooting in Los Angeles in March 1997. But he bears the genes of two incredibly talented parents – he’s the sole product of Biggie’s marriage to singer Faith Evans, a Grammy winner in her own right. Remarried, Evans has continued to record while raising her son.
And Biggie’s old manager, P. Diddy, is still in his life. Diddy recorded a video posted on YouTube featuring CJ and his own son, Christian, telling the world the boys are being prepped for the day “the torch is passed.”
“These are the princes,” Diddy says in video shot street-side in New York. He’s putting a heavy burden on their shoulders – the collaboration between Diddy and Biggie has made untold millions. The Biggie album that dropped days after his death went diamond and sits on TIME”s list of the 100 best albums of all time.
But CJ was allowed by Diddy to speak for himself, and he says he’s happy to be back in New York (where his father was from, where he was born, and where he hasn’t lived since Evans moved them out west to LA). He was smart enough to give some love to school and getting good grades (he’s spoken out before about college plans for film school), and that’s when he dropped the mixtape news.
For a child whose life has been marked by tragedy, who never got to know his father, the past year and a half has been all about getting to know the man the whole world knew first. He spent his time getting ready for his role in Notorious picking up on details from his mom. And now he’s walking right into his father’s world.
If you can’t wait – you can hear Lil Big and the real Biggie on the Notorious soundtrack to get a taste of what we might be in store for with this mixtape – his chart-topping hit One More Chance was remixed to put father and son together.
Will you be keeping an eye on this up-and-coming rapper?
