Want to Look Beautiful? Eat Your Pickles

pickles 300x199 Want to Look Beautiful? Eat Your PicklesI’m not sure what it is, but there’s just something inherently funny about pickles. Don’t take my word for it; here’s what all the 6-year-olds were saying at the camp I worked at this summer:

Slap me 5! Up high! Down low! In the middle! Cut the pickle (pointing his index fingers together)! (Collapse on the floor in hysterical laughter.)

(This, by the way, is not much of an improvement on what my generation used to say at the same age: Slap me 5! Up high! Down low! Too slow (pulling hand away; optional running hand flat alongside your head)!

But pickles aren’t just funny, they’re tasty–my niece has been known to wander the house gnawing on a giant pickle.

In honor of my niece and my former campers, I present to you some fun facts in pickle history, courtesy of the folks over at Mental Floss:

2. Cleopatra claimed pickles made her beautiful. (We guess it had more to do with her genes.)

7. When the Philadelphia Eagles thrashed the Dallas Cowboys in sweltering heat in September 2000, many of the players attributed their win to one thing: guzzling down immense quantities of ice-cold pickle juice.

6. The Department of Agriculture estimates that the average American eats 8.5 lbs of pickles a year.

But if your kids don’t like pickles, have no fear; some, ahem, creative individuals have come up with a surefire way to get kids to eat them:

4. In the Delta region of Mississippi, Kool-Aid pickles have become ridiculously popular with kids. The recipe’s simple: take some dill pickles, cut them in half, and then soak them in super strong Kool-Aid for more than a week. According to the New York Times, the sweet vinegar snacks are known to sell out at fairs and delicatessens, and generally go for $.50 to a $1.

On the one hand, these are essentially glorified sweet pickles. On the other hand…. eew.

My little nephew has a major taste for pickles – the kid is five, and he cadges them off of every plate at family get togethers. I am always so surprised he likes them!
