The Top 10 Weirdest Things Said to Pregnant Women
5. This old lady at Target looked at me and shook her head. She said, “You young girls need to see there are other things to do in the winter, and you won’t end up in your situation.” I told her I was in my mid 20s and had been married for 3 years and that my “situation” was actually a blessing!
It’s nice when geriatric strangers walk up to you and call you a harlot.
Recently iVillage asked readers to respond to the question, “What’s the weirdest, rudest or most oblivious thing anyone has said to you while you were pregnant?” The top answers ranged from baffling, to TMI to creepy.
1. A woman at the pool said, “You must be having a girl—they say that girl babies steal their mother’s beauty.”
2. When we announced our pregnancy, my father-in-law said, “It’s about time, we were beginning to wonder if you needed a biology lesson!” We’d been trying for a year, and I’d been on fertility drugs for six months.
3. Last week the FedEx guy said, “After you, your load is bigger than mine.”
4. A week before I gave birth to my first baby, these two snooty women walked up to me
and asked me to my face, “Why aren’t you wearing maternity clothes? Do you not believe in them?” And then they walked off laughing at me. I was wearing maternity clothes! They had just stopped fitting at that point!

Cali Mom commented on Aug 05 09 at 1:49 pmUnfortunately, these are not that uncommon. We tried for several years to have a child, and had 2 miscarriages. Even some people who knew about our miscarriages were telling us things like “so when are you guys going to finally have that baby?” or “everyone else seems to have no trouble. All these people who started trying after you already have kids. You guys better speed things up.”
And when I finally passed the first trimester with my son, I had a “friend” who told me that I should be careful because I could still miscarry. How exactly is that supposed to be helpful?
When I finally did get huge, I have to say I didn’t mind people making comments about my huge belly. I was so happy to have made it that far that I was proud of it. (That FedEx comment would have actually made me smile.)
Amy commented on Aug 05 09 at 4:45 pmComments I am a waitress, and at about 8 months pregnant I was letting a table know about deserts. The man at the table said, “You look like you know all about deserts, just bring us what you think is good.” The woman he was eating with hit him!
Mistress_Scorpio commented on Aug 05 09 at 5:52 pmMy SIL’s MIL knows my husband and I don’t go to church. She came up to me at a party and asked me to promise her that I’d be a “moral mother.”
Mrs Embers commented on Aug 06 09 at 4:04 pmBoth times I was pregnant, I’d get “The Look” from strangers, especially middle-aged and older women: the “Oh, look at that- another pregnant teen! Babies having babies!” The thing is I was 24 when I had my first and 27 with my second. I jut look like I’m younger! I once got “My, you’re starting young!” Nosy much?
