This is a new column on Strollerderby. Every week I’ll be highlighting the kid-friendly comic books that are hitting the racks on Wednesday, which is the day the new stuff comes in. But you knew that.

I get my weekly comic book fix at Midtown Comics (they’re not paying me to say that, but darn it, they should). A complete list of new items is available at their web site. You can also get them via home delivery, but personally I think it’s more fun to go to the store. Actually, comic books are one of the last items I regularly buy offline.

Scholastic: Wordgirl Robot Rampage TP, Ben 10 Alien Force Alien Complete Guide TP

There aren’t any Wordgirl fans in my house, but at $3.99 the price is right. This doesn’t appear to be a new book, and it’s also not a comic. Perhaps this is the first time it’s being offered in a comic book store. As for Ben 10 Alien Force, if you have a kid who is into this, you probably know it.

Archie Comics:  Betty #181, Betty & Veronica Double Digest #173, Tales From Riverdale Digest #34, Sonic The Hedgehog Archives Vol 11 TP

The staying power of Archie Andrews and the gang from Riverdale is truly amazing. I read these stories when I was a kid, now my son reads them. The big upcoming event in the Archie-verse is ol’ Arch marrying Veronica, not Betty. Horrors! Both of my boys are big Sonic fans, so Volume 11 of Sonic Archives is sure to please. Also of note: this latest Sonic book is in comics shops this week, but won’t be available from Amazon until August 19. Don’t say I never gave you anything.

Graphix: Magic Pickle And The Garden Of Evil Young Readers TP, Rose HC Color Edition, Rose TP Color Edition

I’m not familiar with these books. “Magic Pickle…” appears to be not a new title.

Borderline (Could Be For Kids Or Adults): Wednesday Comics #5

This weekly title from DC is a great idea — a large format comic with multiple stories by a variety of writers and artists. So far, I’m finding it to be a bit jumbled; some writers seem to know how to tell a story one page at a time and some can do an entire installment where nothing happens. The reason I say this may or may not be good for your kids is because some of the stories are a bit on the darker side. Nothing horrible, but I think it’s not technically an “all ages” title.

Do NOT Show This To Your Kids: Boys #33

Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s “The Boys” is one of my favorite comics at the moment. The first six issues in particular are brilliant. This title is also filthy, so much so that you should not, under any circumstances, allow your children to see it. They will be scarred for life.

Expensive Toys That You Wouldn’t Let Your Kids Touch: Iron Man Mark II 12-Inch Action Figure (Hot Toys, $159.99); Dark Knight 1/6 Scale Batmobile (Hot Toys, $450.00)

New toys come out every week as well. Many of these are “collectibles”, which is code for “expensive.” If a toy Batmobile costs $450, it is no longer a toy. At least, not one to be played with. I’m not all that into the collectibles thing, although I admit that I did buy the Star Trek pez dispensers and have not taken them out of the box. But that’s different.
