Is This Girl’s Food Fight With Obamas Fair?

Posted by madeline holler on August 5th, 2009 at 6:27 pm

food fight 300x225 Is This Girls Food Fight With Obamas Fair?A Florida girl is now the poster child for an effort to get more nutritious lunches in the nation’s schools. The face of Jasmine Messiah, 8, will appear in posters all over D.C. as a part of the Healthy School Lunches campaign’s effort to lobby Congress.

In the poster, a dialogue bubble asks why the Miami-Dade County, Florida, girl doesn’t get healthy lunches like the First Daughters do. In fact, Jasmine is a vegetarian, but there are not vegetarian options in her school cafeteria.

The Obama girls get vegetarian options — and more. Why, Jasmine wants to know. Why?

I agree with Jasmine’s sentiment but can easily answer the question, Jasmine: money and influence. Fresh vegetables cost more than surplus fries and corn syrup loaded ketchup. Also, the kids in your school aren’t likely the offspring of the well-to-do who have time and influence and, again, money, to influence these matters. Is Sidwell Friends facing budget cuts this year? Are they having to do more with less? Does the school count on public money to meet it’s budget? Mmmm, maybe. But not like your school, Jasmine.

So it’s great you’re asking!

Then again, I wonder if it’s fair to drag Sasha and Malia into the discussion. She even wrote Sasha and Malia a letter, pleading her case. Ultimately, I side with Jasmine on this. Some political experts say this could anger the President. However, if the Obama girls can be used to sell expensive, trendy winter coats, then, sure, they can be the focus of social inequality, health inequality and food inequality in the country.

As a sidenote, the write-up that brought my attention to this Healthy School Lunches campaign, Todd Wright’s little punchline about Jasmine Messiah’s pose is, well, I don’t know. Horrifyingly outdated at best, a bit racist at worst. I don’t think he would have mentioned two snaps had it been my white 8-year-old sassing at the camera over school lunch.

From NBC Connecticut:

On the poster, which touts the Reform the Child Nutrition Act, Messiah appears in a sassy pose next to a thought bubble that reads, “President Obama‘s daughters get healthy school lunches. Why don’t I?” The only thing missing from the add [sic] is two finger snaps

Know what I mean?

I think bringing attention to the horrible state of school lunches in many public schools is really important. And worth whatever risk there is in referencing the President’s daughters. Besides, it makes a big difference to me that the ad mentions his daughters in a nameless way so as to point to the position one has when related to power. The ad doesn’t mention them by name. To me, that’s far less personal.

Nancy commented on Aug 05 09 at 8:09 pm

It is more than fair. So would be a poster talking about how Obama’s girls get to go to a school that is bright, clean, with great teachers and computers, why can’t I?

It is because you are not rich Jasmine, and that is just how it is in America, moreover the Presidents enemies would make it worse, so if your effort hurts him it will probably hurt you.

Here’s an idea: Pack your own vegetarian lunch. Is “vegetarian school lunch” now a human right?

Totally agree with Madeline on the finger snap thing. So, so obvious.

ChiLaura commented on Aug 06 09 at 10:29 am

This attitude of entitlement really bugs me. What are Jasmine’s parents doing about the poor quality of her school lunches, I wonder? That’s where the action needs to start, not with a sassy rant to the President. Playing the smart alec victim doesn’t garner support, it just annoys people. Well, it annoyed me anyway.

Amy commented on Aug 06 09 at 12:01 pm

I am in awe of how President Obama is expected to fix EVERYTHING. NOW. Federally, it would be a really difficult thing to manage. School lunches ought to be state and community issue, not a national one.

Maybe I’m pulling one of those annoying “back in my day”isms, but at least half the schools I attended did not provide any lunch at all. You brought it in. That was normal. I feel like it should still be the norm.

Bec commented on Aug 06 09 at 1:17 pm

Maybe if Jasmine could have gotten a school voucher from the program that President Obama decided to kill simply to appease his buddies in the NEA and AFT she could get not only the healthier school lunches but the superior education that Malia and Sasha receive.

Sorry, Jasmine, but school lunches in Miami-Dade were disgusting when I was a kid, too. This was almost 20 years ago, but some of the older schools may still have “satellite” kitchens that get their food from a central kitchen and reheat it for the students at lunchtime. I ate the french bread pizza and chicken nuggets, but quit altogether when I found something that looked like either a boil or a 3-inch scab on my hamburger (I swear).

After teaching in South Florida and moving to North Carolina, I was appalled at the differences in the quality of school meals between the two districts I’ve worked in. Turns out, cafeteria managers have about 30 cents to spend per kid from the federal school lunch program every day. They count on the students who don’t receive free or reduced price meals to buy their food in the cafeteria and supplement the budget. More broke kids at a school = less nutritious, nastier food.

And actually, I DO believe there’s a federal requirement to provide a vegetarian lunch option every day. However, in some schools, that might be American cheese on a hamburger bun with a side of corn and applesauce. Tasty!

Shannon commented on Aug 06 09 at 3:13 pm

Okay…why can’t you do what I did when my school district didn’t provide ANY, much less healthy, vegetarian options? I packed and brought and ate my OWN lunch.

PlumbLucky commented on Aug 06 09 at 3:30 pm

If Obama’s daughters went to public school, she would have a point. But it’s just ridiculous. Why stop there? Why not whine about why you don’t get to live in a bigger house or wear better clothes?

Take some responsibility and pack your own damn lunch. I found this incredibly annoying.

Lorraine commented on Aug 07 09 at 1:01 pm

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again….There is no such thing as a free lunch, vegetarian or otherwise.

I support vouchers for school choice, and for the poorest americans vouchers (food stamps) for food. Jasmine’s parents should have the choice of where to send their daughter to school (a choice President Obama’s family has always used to support private education) and they already have the choice of what to feed their daughter.

dianna commented on Aug 09 09 at 10:13 am

Ok, yeah, finger snap is way out of line, but how hard is it to pack a bag of carrots and a cheese sandwich. School lunches are gross anyway.

cheri commented on Sep 04 09 at 5:33 pm

PS: Last time I checked, fries and ketchup are veggie. :)

cheri commented on Sep 04 09 at 5:34 pm

School lunches are as important in providing a learning enviroment as a well trained instructor. If a child gets garbage to eat, his/her education is just so much garbage. ‘Leave No Child Behind, is as important during breaks, “lunch breaks”, as classroom time.
i.e., try focusing your thoughts with an upset or hungry stomach.

Neel commented on Sep 04 09 at 6:52 pm

CommentsPrivilages and rights are not interchangable as are wants and needs. Until people understand the true and not implied meanings of these two conditions, arguments like these will surely continue. I for one am in agreement with the parents of all children in this situation is they should pack their own lunch. If not the complete, then a supplemental one.
How many times havs one been in the grocery line and seen the inappropriate choices people make when using food stamps. Crap like chips, SunnyD, processed cupcakes and the like are the bilk of the items chosen. The day I see tigher restrictions on the food choices in this case, is the day we have a balanced budget and continue to do so.
In answer to the little girls question, BECAUSE YOUR PARENT(S) MADE BAD CHOICES AND NOW YOU HAVE TO SUFFER THE CONSEQUENSCES. Get over it and don’t continue the cycle over multiple generations.

HY this is to grolo who the heck are u to say who can by whatin america a free country!!?? who died and left u king or queen. This is america if ppl want junk they get junk if they want health they get that. It is their choice, and if that is taken away , and they’re being told what they can abd can not buy, athen we’re not being a free country!! You are way out of line there, and hate me if you want I dont care!! I know what it is like to work hard for what I got . It is not easy out there. And I hear everyone talking about bringing own lunches to school. Not everyone has that luxury to do. Some ppl are so poor they rely on those free lunches to sustain them for that day maby. So I think Jasmine is right, and a very brave girl to stand up, and do whats right, and for what she believes in!! True it is the school’s fault. But maby the presedent will finally see the horrors that go on in there, and finally fix it!! Harsh reality, but we need it!!

kagomelucker commented on Sep 07 09 at 1:20 am

and another thing don’t u dare yell about that kid and her parents like that, and say get over it. It is not her fault. She is also a little girl, and doesn’t know better

Stop picking at those two girls. Take some of your veggies to school.Seems to be a crime to be the Obama’s children. Leave them alone

Elise commented on Sep 07 09 at 4:15 am

Comments The question being asked by this child is appropriate but directed to the wrong audience. She should be asking her parents this question. No one owes this child a healthy lunch but her parents. The president’s children attend a swanky school with swanky lunches because their parents worked hard to get a great education. Parents must begin to take responsibility for their own children BOTTOM LINE. Public schools have become the dumping ground for many of the ills that plague society. The purpose of schools are to educate. We are not social service people, doctors, lawyers, couselors….. Parents step up and raise your own kids! Send them to schools equipped to learn and stop relying on other people to do your job!

CommentsVegetables don’t cost more unless:

Veggies get dumped in the trash because lazy sleazy FATHERS and mothers don’t teach their kids BY EXAMPLE the importance of eating them.

Veggies are not served at schools because lazy sleazy FATHERS and mothers don’t attend PTA and take an active role in schools.

Veggies get less shelf space because lazy sleazy FATHERS and mothers buy more booze and snack foods so business stock what sells and what’s easy.

Pat Delaney commented on Sep 07 09 at 12:33 pm

It is a shame that there are not healthier options available to school children. No one can argue with that….. HOWEVER we might want to reread the constitution prior to complaining too much….
The Bill of Rights states nothing about healthy school lunches….. in fact, the welfare and social programs we have are a privilage, not a right. If you do not like what the school is feeding your kid, then pack your kid a lunch. Don’t have the money? Then you are receiving a free or reduced lunch for your kid and you should be grateful that your child is being fed…. I am thinking a non-vegitarian lunch is definitely better than starvation. It is not the government’s job to feed, clothe, and house us. However, we have this sense of self-entitlement in this nation that leads us to believe that it should. This country was established and the constitution written with the intention of limited government….. no big government. The more help you ask for from the government the less freedoms we all possess. Do the Obama girls have better lunches? Yes. Is that “fair”? No…. but no one promises life to be fair. President Obama worked hard to be where he is, and has worked hard to provide a good life to his wife and daughters. I did not vote for President Obama, and am not a fan of his politics, but can certainly respect his hard work. That is what this country is about…. FREEDOM, LIBERTY, DEMOCRACY, AND A SUPPLY AND DEMAND ECONOMY FUELED BY HARD WORK AND DETERMINATION. Quit whining America!!!!! Quit asking the government to fix every stupid problem in our lives!!!! You want the government to control everything and make all your decisions for you? THEN MOVE TO A SOCIALIST OR COMMUNIST NATION AND QUIT TRYING TO CHANGE AMERICA!!!!!

Lucy commented on Sep 07 09 at 12:50 pm

I have to add that I am so proud of my fellow Americans as I read some of these comments…. it is so reassuring to know that there are so many people that recognize their responsibility to themselves and their family, and who see the problem in relying on the government or others to fix our personal/social problems. It is so refreshing to see this. Keep it up!!!!

I found this poster and the child to be extremely annoying. Can’t be upset with the Obama girls because their parents worked hard and got good educations.

Tax dollars for the most part, support public school. So if parents aren’t paying their taxes, sorry Jaz, but you’re up that creek. Pack your lunch instead and insist your parents not allow you to be used and exploited.

Yes, school lunches suck. When I didn’t like it, I packed my own lunch. Get over it.

Dee commented on Sep 07 09 at 12:54 pm

Just because people are financially disadvantaged does not mean they are “sleazy fathers and mothers” as Pat said. I work in a very poor school and the parents would like to be more involved but they can’t because they are working 3 jobs to provide for their family. Why would they spend 3x as much money on veggies when they can get more for their money by buying less healthy options?

jen commented on Sep 07 09 at 1:08 pm

CommentsPresident Obamas daughters are entitled to a richer lifestyle BECAUSE their father is the president, plain and simple! They are offered the best of everything because their father carries that title. It is the same for the children of Kings and Queens, Princes and Princesses, and all other titles of privilege everywhere on earth. What is so hard to understand about that? I suppose next Jasmine will want to know why she can”t have a chauffer-driven car to go to and from school instead of that filthy bus, and how about some secret service men to protect her from the bullies in school.?!! Its a right afforded to dignitaries and the very rich.

Comments California has done healthy lunches for years. So should every state !! When my children were in school, I made their lunches so that they would get a meal that they liked and was good for them. My daughter remembers being carted around our local organic co-op as we picked out what she wanted to go into her lunches for the week. I was happy and she was happy as we made our choices together. Most public schools are way behind in the food issue, so I can sympathize w/ Jasmine. We’re with you 100%, Jasmine !!!!!! signed, Organic for 45 years.

Comments: Do you all really hear yourselves? This little girl probably auditioned to be the little girl in the poster to voice her opinion of wanting healthier school lunches whether it includes the option of vegetarian lunches or not. If you look at the poster, clearly you will see that this poster is a message from the National School Lunch Program. Not from the little girl. Besides we would have not known that this little girl was a vegetarian by looking at the poster; so why based your arguments on her alone “fighting for vegetarian lunch options”? Everyone has a story to tell but the story is not about you it’s about the children and what their having in school. Yeah parents can take the responsibility to send their children to school with their own lunches but what about the parents who can’t afford to do so? Their child will have to eat the school lunch. Now I agree parents should attend PTA meetings, so they can voice their concerns but that’s not the point. The cafeteria staff should have some heart and a conscious to know what their feeding the children is crap and to think to themselves, would they feed their child this mess or would they allow for someone else to feed their child this mess? It’s sad said to say but race is still a big issue in this country. If it was a Caucasian girl in this poster, really and truly would the comments be same? Ignorant to state but some of these comments are unjust to the little girl and to the point of this matter. Point is…… What can the President say or do to help the state and local levels of government about this matter?

"Who Thee Most High Bless No Man Curse" commented on Sep 14 09 at 8:45 am

This is a very good argument about school lunches and their nutrition. All my kids went to public schools, and these schools provided vegetable, but there was a price to pay. Move to a good school district and pay more taxes in that district all that accompanies it, your kids will have the best of everything those schools could provide starting with teachers.Having done that I had to cut back on what i thought was unnecessary, so that my kids could get the best, and i never complained now they are in very good public collages which are also giving the best of everything a student is supposed to get.Stop asking why the president’s kids are having health lunches, even if they were not president’s kids, they will be having health lunches because they had the money before they lived in the white house. That is even why the president was talking about recently to students, work hard, stay in school, focus and all that, instead of thinking about free stuff always coming your way, the fact that he was like some of those kids who are complaining about their lunch but he looked beyond that and now see where he is.

What about when the parents “choose” to buy crap and the kid knows that it’s not healthy and they can’t even get a healthy meal at school, regardless of whether it’s vegetarian or not? Are these young children supposed to go out and steal their food or just eat the crap that their parents and schools feed them? Beyond providing healthy lunches for those children whose parents can’t afford to provide them lunches, schools need to provide healthy lunches for those children whose parents make bad food decisions for them. There are many children out there who are smarter than their parents, but are forced to eat crap, either because that’s all their parents buy and/or because that’s all the school provides. Are these children supposed to just suffer? It’s no wonder or schools are failing in so many places and our children are falling behind so many other countries…. we just keep blaming each other and saying “it’s the parents fault” or “it’s the school’s fault”, instead of realizing that there’s a problem that just needs to be fixed. The only easy answer is, and it’s still not easy, is to quit forcing our kids, who can’t do much about it on their own, to choose between one crappy thing and another. There should be at least some healthy food options, at reasonable prices, in all of our schools, regardless of race, location, age, or sex.

Blu commented on Sep 14 09 at 9:45 am

I doubt much will come of it because of the money issues, but this is a pretty smart move. One must remember, as others have pointed out, that lawmakers and so forth are the elites. They don’t have to deal with many issues that average people do.

If you look at transportation reform, a few decades ago, airplanes were the first to receive attention, because that’s how the elites travel. Buses, however, weren’t brought up until a congressman RODE THE BUS to the Hill that day and was shocked. The easiest way to get advocacy is to expose elites to what we deal with everyday and win their sympathy.

Anonymous commented on Dec 15 09 at 7:18 am

Cost ISN’T the issue if you factor in farming subsidies handed out by the government artificially driving the price of certain cheap foods low. It’s interesting that people get all in a huff about “welfare” and government programs and handouts, but they don’t realize assistance to actual people is >2% and
CORPORATE WELFARE is so much more of a problem.
