Kindle Ate His Homework
If only we’d had this kind of excuse back in the day! A kid whose Kindle was caught up in the raft of recent glitches that have caused books to disappear had a very simple explanation for not turning in his George Orwell report: the Kindle ate my homework.
Owner Amazon has been dealing with a host of angry owners of the digital readers after two Orwell books were removed from libraries without their permission. And now the teen whose book AND notes were lost is suing.
Justin Gawronski is the name being linked to a class action suit against Amazon for deletion of his book, Orwell’s 1984, which he was reading over the summer for a report he’ll have to hand in this fall for his advanced placement course with a test to follow. But this suit is far more than child’s play.
There’s an adult reader who’s signed on as well, and if they win, the suit would bar the bookseller from every again recalling books without the express permission of the purchasers. And as the reason cited for the recall was an Amazon dispute over who actually owned the rights to the Orwell titles, it would make Amazon responsible for whatever damages the true owner of a title would call for in case another book were sold without permission. But the Kindle “owners” would retain their rights – regardless.
Gawronski’s attorney compared the removal of Orwell’s books from people’s personal Kindles with hackers sneaking into Amazon’s personal bank account to fix a billing mistake.
Of course, the best news out of all of this: a teen supposed to get a handle on George Orwell’s 1984, just got a slam-bang lesson on Big Brother and Orwellian principles. Chances are, he can ace that test.
