Recession = DIY Summer Camps
It’s summer. Your kid’s out of school and ready for camp. But your pocketbook is not prepared to take yet another financial hit. When the going gets tough, the tough get all DIY. A new trend for cash strapped families with tight budgets is not Camp Recess but Camp Recession.
With sleep away camps being out of reach financially for many a family, city friendly adventures and local amusements have replaced the long trek from home. Some parents are joining forces and putting together daily adventures for the kids to participant in, while some parents are opting to commit to taking their kids out to do something fun each day - all day.
Some parents, as sited in a recent AP article, are putting together their own home camps charging amounts like $60 per day per family to entertain and feed a crew of 8 to 12 kids at their own homes. While another mom - Alma Schneider - put together a “fashion camp” with her neighbor, teaching the kids some stylish crafts with the week ending with a fashion show by the kids. Alma Schneider will be doing her own food camp for the kids soon. “I’m a community minded person,” she said. “If we all shared our skills and talents we wouldn’t have to outsource everything. It’s a great model to learn from each other’s expertise.”
If you were to do a DIY camp for kids, what would you do?
