A Breastfeeding Doll? WTF?
Yes, you heard right. I wish it was a joke, and maybe it is and I didn’t notice. But all signs point to this being real. From Thingamababy:
“Bebé Glotón is a infant doll made by Berjuan, a toy maker in Spain, for the express purpose of promoting breastfeeding. The idea is to impress upon kids that breastfeeding is natural.”
Hey, sounds great, right? But for me, the weird part is that your child would attach some sort of breastfeeding vest that the doll can suckle. Or as Thingamababy puts it, “a colorful bra-like halter-top featuring flowers over the nipple area.” Either way, I vote weird.
Also a little odd: Apparently “Glotón” translates to “Glutton” in English (at least online). So this would be the Baby Glutton. But that, like the spelling of “labour,” could just be a language thing.
Here are some screenshots of the doll from the company’s web site. The captions are not the actual instructions. I made them up. Just so we’re clear.
Note that there are other dolls that show breastfeeding, such as the Mini Mamas magnetic breastfeeding dolls. But those have dolls breastfeeding another doll. It’s not a kid pretending to breastfeed a doll using some strap-on apparatus.
So what do you think? Weird? Cool? Somewhere in between?
UPDATE: for another doll that doesn’t make “weird slurping sounds”, check out Meredith’s post about the Moby Mini over at Droolicious.

Video of the Breastfeeding Doll | Strollerderby commented on Aug 13 09 at 10:00 amShannon LC Cate commented on Jul 29 09 at 12:10 pmMy strictly bottle-fed daughters pretend to breastfeed their stuffed animals and dolls all the time. They stick them up under their shirts. The only weird part about this to me is the strap-on contraption. ANY doll can be a “breastfeeding doll.” This strikes me as a marketing gimmick.
Mistress_Scorpio commented on Jul 29 09 at 1:11 pmAgreed. Gimmicky.
barb commented on Jul 29 09 at 2:02 pmwhat a silly doll, but breastfeeding is under promoted in Spain so I guess they are trying to do something right.
oh and yes, gloton mean glutton for sure - but this is not necessarily intended negatively as it is often used oddly positively regarding children’s eating habits there
Amy commented on Jul 29 09 at 2:41 pmIt’s better than a doll that pees.
Sarah commented on Jul 29 09 at 3:29 pmI don’t like it because it’s gimmicky, but I get the impression that you think it’s creepy for a child to pretend to breastfeed. How is that any weirder than a kid pretending to bottle-feed a doll?
Brett Singer commented on Jul 29 09 at 5:58 pmIt’s a gut reaction. I think it’s the girl putting on an apparatus that I found odd. Meredith points out the possibility of “weird slurping sounds” over at Droolicious (http://snipurl.com/o8kdq) and I think that could add to the strangeness. I honestly never thought about a kid pretending to breastfeed a doll, but that doesn’t provoke the same reaction in me as this product, nor does the doll that Meredith posted about on Drool.
Shannon LC Cate commented on Jul 29 09 at 7:16 pmThe slurping noises are gross-sounding indeed. But Brett, I bet if you had girls instead of boys you wouldn’t be wigged. In fact, one of these days your boys might try to breastfeed a doll or stuffed animal. It happens. So just be prepared!
LindaLou commented on Jul 29 09 at 10:36 pmComments When girls (or boys) have a breastfeeding mother, that’s how they pretend to feed their babies. Nothing creepy about it.
Dagmar Bleasdale commented on Jul 30 09 at 12:58 amHmm, I am a huge breastfeeding advocate and blog about it very often (http://DagmarBleasdale.com), but this? Hmm. I don’t think this doll is necessary, any stuffed animal or doll will do. Kids just copy what they see, so it’s natural for them to copy mommy breastfeeding. Baby Glutton? LOL! Love it!
Lisa commented on Aug 05 09 at 9:13 amI’m a mother. This is sick! A child does not need to know about “breast feeding” at this time in their lives. Let kids enjoy their childhood. They will have PLENTY of time to learn and understand breast feeding at the APPROPRIATE AGE - teenage years and up! There’s a bigger picture to look at, and to see young girls strap up and have a doll to their chest can give the wrong idea to people out there who abuse children sexually. It can also give a confusing message to kids (especially girls). While I understand the need to educate people on breast feeding, please understand that the wrong age group has been targeted to promote this! For those of you who support this, perhaps you should get your head examined!
Cherie commented on Aug 06 09 at 2:34 pmComments Lisa, I sure hope you didn’t let your little girls stick a bottle to the lips of their baby dolls. That would certainly be disgusting and give the wrong impression and teach your daughters that it is ok to suck on cylindrical objects put into their mouths! eewww! Talk about sexual abuse, yuck. Of course, if your were breastfeeding your YOUNG children would already be knowing that breasts are for food and not hidden like a sex toy and wouldn’t need to be TAUGHT when they are older.
Cherie commented on Aug 06 09 at 2:45 pmHow awful is this doll, it may promote little girls and boys wanting to someday become parents. Oh my gosh! Playing “mommy” is even more realistic with this sweet baby doll! Press the doll’s bracelet to “wake” her up. It’s time to eat! Mix her special food and feed her, using her bowl and spoon - she’ll really “chew” her food and even “drink” from her bottle - and tell you how much she likes it! And since she’s “potty training”, she’ll also let you know when she needs to go. Better hurry, though! Put her on the potty and she’ll “pee” and “poop”. But if you don’t get there in time, you might hear her say, “Oops. I had an accident! Her name is Baby Alive, by Hasbro. http://www.hasbro.com/babyalive/en_US/shop/details.cfm?guid=93FEC881-6D40-1014-8BF0-9EFBF894F9D4&product_id=22167&src=endeca

Rachael commented on Aug 17 09 at 4:27 pmLisa, really? Sick? And not appropriate? And mothers who promote having their daughters know what her breasts are for, and the natural way to feed an infant need to get their heads examined? I feel sorry for you. You are completely out of touch with reality I am afraid. Little girls will pretent to feed their babies no matter if a doll promotes it or not. And I would much rather see my little girl pretending to breastfeed than bottle feed.
Jennifer M commented on Sep 07 09 at 11:43 amComments: What I think is sick is letting your child pretend to feed a baby with a bottle. My daughter plays with a nursey doll, I think its horrible that mother’s would push a “potty doll” or Besty Wetsy or whatever you call them on a kid to push them to toilet train, when they should be teaching them things like what their breasts are really for. Or hell, you could just give them a bratz doll so they can learn how to dress and act like a whore, I would worry more about teen pregnancy from the children that play with bratz then a nursing doll. get real.
